Another blow thru 1600 build

With Turbo and Super charging you can create massive horsepower with vw motors.

Ok, I got this turbo apart. That was fun. I’m probably not going to rebuild it. But now in a get the broken bolt out and clock it for my set up. Two questions:
What was a free spinning cartridge when assembled, now has drag. There’s a cone shaped shield that I guess is supported. And now is causing the drag?
Second, do I wire wheel and clean the contact surfaces?

The bolt is out and the hole is tapped. I’m going to buy new bolts and get it all back together.

Nice. So you weren't running a turbo before right? This will be your first go at it?

Yes first timer. I’ll be asking a lot of vacuum hose and other questions. This will evolve into a winter project. My bug is running and on the road with a 1600 with a .419 lift cam, dual ict’s and 1700lb clutch.
First I want to change to the single dell and the vacuum advance distributor.

Got the clock mocked up and any rubbing of the shield inside went away. That’s good.

That IS good!
How does your engine run NA with that 419 lift cam?

It runs good, but I never built an engine this small or with this small amount of carbration. So to me it feels like it needs to breathe. I’m sure my dual 40 dells would wake it up. But, I’m not going that route.

Sure. It's tough when your dealing with a 50hp engine. Even making another 10 hp is quite a bit, but your still dealing with 60hp then. Not much.
Turbo will be substantial! You might go from 60hp to 110 just like that! That's a huge jump!

Ordered some parts from CB Performance last night. Their out of some Dellorto jets, t3 flange and don’t have mod rings in my size. I have 32 vents.

I had asked about running 2” pipe up into the turbo. I didn’t weld the new flange to the header, yet. But, it maybe easier to got 1 3/4” outlet. If I got that route, should expand up to 2” or run 1 3/4” all the way up. I’m snaking up from a super stubby 4 into 1 header. Turbo will be in the engine bay.

I used 1 3/4" up on my drawthrough system. Might even be better than 2" on a 1600. Gotta keep that air speed up.

I guess I need a gasket. Or would high temp silicone work on the compressor?

Only gasket I have is on my valve covers (and they still want to leak). I use Permatex Ultra Copper on everything else.
On a turbo though... I have no idea. I've never seen a gasket on a turbo before, but I've only seen a few.

You would need something like the above kit. Looks like blow by on either your center seals.

I’m not 100% sure if that’s the one for your turbo, I just googled 1982 Saab 900 turbo so I wouldn’t hit the buy it now button till you research it.

I would avoid sealants as they are most likely gonna fling/spread or get blown out.
