Yeah, it kind of offends me, but what damn difference does that make? Squids always have a knack for getting on my nerves. :D

The ONLY reason those TI systems are so cheap is VOLUME! Volume is the key to cheaper prices and I'm trying my best to increase the volume sales of TIV parts and drop prices.

At the same time I refuse to up volunme to the point of having junk made in a third world country and dropping the quality off the scale. Look at the quality of tiger's welds and cuts and collectors and the truth comes out quick..

Until this, the cheapest thing that was worth a damn at all was a BAS system, and it has 3 miles of tubing under the car and has to come from Germany costing 700.00+ by the time you are done. This new system is a god send- period. I will do everything I possibly can to get these prices down including spending THOUSANDS of dollars of MY OWN MONEY to buy then 30-40 at a time to drop prices(The TI headers are bought by the hundreds by huge companies that run more through their bank account in a week than I do in a year)! Do you hear me complaining about that?? Nope because thats what its gonna take to keep the type IV revolution strong and ongoing and get more cars converted.

The Type IV is so picky about exhaust its not even funny. You'll see this when I test the systems in the coming weeks and post the data. Not just for performance but for heat and exhaust valve life as well.

See, what pisses me off is that this is a product that is BEING DEVELOPED- Not something thats just being bent up, made fit and tossed into a damn box to be sold. Last time I checked no one was paying me for being in a 120 degree dyno cell, baking my hands on 400 degree headers to get accurate data in back to back runs comparatively under the same exacting conditions.... Or the wear and tear on my dyno, or even the fuel it takes to do the tests and the engines required to get the results. You better be glad that the system is being developed!

All this while still doing other jobs to try to keep food on the table!

What gets me is that people moan about junk parts, and then others moan about cost. Wanna talk about cost? How about destroying a 6,000.00 Dyno waterbrake during cooling system testing because of holding a load for so long trying to get real results!

On a lighter note, I just got back from A-1 to pick up the longblock and the BAS header. My dad and I went down there and had a great discussion. Here are some of the highlights of our discussion.

1). My BAS 21152 header has 31" tubes, which Tiger says is tuned for 8000rpm. His header has 34.5" long tubes, which is better suited for a lower rpm.

2). Header options: stainless steel(extra cost) or mild steel, 1 5/8" standard but can do bigger, collector type is matched to engine, painted black, ceramic coated (black, silver), polished stainless. O2 sensor bung and plug ($25 extra)

3). Prices: These are tentative prices, they may change as the development continues. This is only to give you an idea of what you can expect.
header w/o stub pipes (mild steel, no finish) $350
header w/o stub pipes (mild steel, ceramic coated) $400
stub pipes $125

4). The low end muffler (good to 145hp) is the Fatboy which is $120, $50 more for ceramic coating. It's also the quietest.
The next one up is louder (it's a straight thru) and is good to 180hp.

5). Sidewinder design is do-able as a custom built header. Contact Tiger if you are interested in that one.

Anyways, I'm out of here again. I will post more later.

Jake, we do appreciate it man! Trust me on that one.

I think the FatBoy with the system would be a great dual purpose system. That Magnaflow is too loud! :D

I am only waiting for the testing to place my order, and there are three other guys waiting to place orders too.

It may be too good for what I have now, but when my engine grows(and it will) it'll still work.
Like Jake said, this is a God send. The price of the system, ceramic coated and all, with muffler, ready to install is way less than just the BAS header plus shipping.

s*#t, i dont think that is going to fit me car . my 912 is suported from the back like a bus only with a 914 hanger and the hanger sit's low .
It's what you learn after you know every thing that counts.

This is all sounding perfect to me. Let's look at the big picture:

We have a new header in town that can be made in quantity by a reputable shop. Purchacing will be a breeze for the USA. Prices will be inline with T1 headers from A1 and less than the BAS. There are options for custom versions that will fit the odd ball or picky applications.

WE NOW HAVE OPTIONS :D :D :D There will be good systems for $550 including muffler and stub pipes for the lower cost engines. There will be upgrades or taste options like sidewinders and ceramic coatings for a few hundred more, for a mid priced engine, and we have tangerines for the big boys. Not that a Tangerine doesn't kick butt on any engine, but for money best spent it will most likely find itself on an engine that has some top notch headwork, ballancing, etc to take even more advantage of its capabilities. This is the "Peoples header" :)

Jake we all appreciate your work with this, but I bet we'd have a hard time keeping you out of that 120 deg dyno cell for this one. :) This will be some of the best spent time in the hole. :)

From my own experience with engine buggets, the only difference in the budget for cheap and the budget for quality is time. I saved for 2.5 years rather than settling for results that I'll always know could have been better. When it is all said and done the fact that I have been stuck with 80HP for the past few years does not matter. I cheaped out the first time and was not happy, If I cheaped out the 2nd time, why would I be any happier? If you cant save a couple hundred over a few months maybe the whole project is not the smartest thing at this time.

BTW what is the problem with fitment for the 356? It seems Tiger is willing to work with our needs. Ask BAS for a custom header. LOL

Ron, you got it right!

I learned my lesson the hard way. Now slowly collecting parts for the "real" engine I wanted. Still having fun with my Money pit. :D

The exhaust system, just like the cooling system is something one cannot skimp on, or not completely think about.

Heck, you can put all of the huge heads, and big carbs in the world, and if the exhaust won't flow, then it's all wasted money and time.

Next time I have a Super Hero on the dyno it too will receive a comparative test with the A1 header!

Try looking at the larger picture. First, there ARE ways of going cheaper on the exhaust - generally they involve cut down 411 or Bus heat exchangers.

Are they as good as the A1 headers - nope. But neither are the other options you are looking at. A Cali doesn't cool as well as a DTM, Kadrons won't work like Dells, and a $600 rebuild won't buy you Nickies or ceramics.

If you can fab a Cali, I assume you can cut down stock HX's. Just get her running with the cash you got, and save buy new components as you have the cash. Except in this case, START with upgrading the exhaust - you will get the most bang for the buck and it will allow future upgrades to have full effect.

Can this header be used on a T4 with stock cooling? I'm not worried about the fit so much since my T4 project is a rail buggy with lots of room. What I am worried about is the header collector being directly under the stock fan and potentially sucking hot air back into the cooling system??

Thats exactly what it would do.. Theyare made for conversions..

SO.. Convert it and get rid of all that extra weight hanging off the tail end of the car, make it cool better and you can fit the exhaust...LOL

The whole idea of getting Tiger to make a header for the Type IV application was to give people another option. A few people have worked together to make that happen, and alas it is now a reality!!! This is a good thing no matter how you slice it!

Expecting the A-1 header to do EVERYTHING is unrealistic. Do you buy a Honda Civic if you wanna go 4x4ing? The answer quite simply is no. The idea here was not to come up with something that would universally fit everyone's specification, but fill a void that wasn't previously filled.

Anyone who builds ANY other VW than a Type I knows that parts are not as readily available and often turn to modified Type I parts to fit the bill. The initial idea here was not to create something that never existed before, but to maybe make it better and more importantly readily available without having to worry about such issues as overseas shipping.

Somebody once said "Rome wasn't built in a day" and the exact same thing applies here. This solution is not gonna be the answer for everyone, but it is a HUGE step forward for the Type IV and we can rest assured as more developments like this come along you will see a LOT more Type IV powered VW's out there!!!
