Now diluting your thread Wally but here are two links to another way of getting OHC on your VW block.
Not as much fun as the Apfelbeck, but still a "cheap" functional and proven way.
We know each other a long time now Fredrik, so of course I know of these links and many other '911 heads om VW engines', but...the Apfelbeck heads are so much more then that: they were and still are a (much) better version of the aircooled 911 head, period. The extra intake valve and some proper squish area make all the difference. imho but maybe I'am biased
That made my one remaining neuron fire...
This is probably a silly idea (and off topic) but I'll roll with it anyway.

The Afpelbech design could be made modular?
Set it up for a aircooled Porsche /6.
Let the guys with the money trees pay for the development.

They might get them first
but the project gets completed.

Not silly at all and s/th that has already crossed our/their minds - of course, I would almost say -.
Basically your asking is what the hold-up is, but its not for me to say. All I know is people have busy lifes with different priorities.
It will probably come some day, but don't hold your breathe.

Wally wrote: Thu Jan 04, 2018 12:25 am What do you think 'a set' of these heads with everything else that is needed to run those (cams, intake, case modifications, etc) would cost?
And do you have a budget for that amount?

I am thinking roughly US$5000 - $8000. What price range did you guys have in mind.

Any chance the project is "Open" enough to publish the CAD files?

I'd bet someone would have wax 3D prints done is pretty short order, which are more or less ready to become plugs for lost wax castings. Everyone and their dog has a 3D printer these days.
