Actually, I don't see why a rope ladder wouldn't work. Kinda cool really. I like.

Yeah, and then it would be lighter and easier to take off and wouldn't clatter around and I wouldn't injure myself so badly if I hit my head off of it...
I'm agonna rig meself up one of those at some point.

I have some goodi deas for a rope ladder, but I think a fold down will be easier to manage when you are climbing up there with a super beetle strut in one hand trying to throw it on the roof, with the wheel still attached, in the rain...
Hey whats wrong with a friend wanting to help out a fellow Vdubber with her rack situation?
ok yeah... just be glad this isn't in the ORF, imagine the fun herbie would be having with this, let alone lotrat

give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

Well, it would keep a short person from stepping on the tiny leg of someone's sister who got roped into making the trip.fusername wrote:I have some goodi deas for a rope ladder, but I think a fold down will be easier to manage when you are climbing up there with a super beetle strut in one hand trying to throw it on the roof, with the wheel still attached, in the rain...
Speaking of that, haven't seen her lately...she still owes us some vegan munchies~

Go.
There.
To be young and carefree again...

OI! You saying there's something wrong with my rack?!fusername wrote: Hey whats wrong with a friend wanting to help out a fellow Vdubber with her rack situation?
(the end, I promise to say nothing more on the topic)
Sneaks: since i have now asked Fuser FOUR TIMES (glare glare glare) what sort of jack you have -- after he suggested that particular one that he said has a jack and a stand in one -- could you tell me what kind of jack you have for the buses? (...I shoulda just asked you to begin with...)

PS - fuser, I'm grumbling at you for ruining my fun (and for not telling me about the jack). I think a rope ladder would be more enjoyable. But perhaps you're right, perhaps less practical. Perhaps I'll do both.
grumble grumble I don't LIKE fold-down ladders grumble

Took me a minute to think of what he meant. I have the factory jack for it but what I think he's talking about is this thing:sparklingredpepper wrote:

Very cool, very solid and even lifts up the Suburban with ease. At $30, it's more than worth the price.
As for the ladder, a rope one with metal tubes as rungs would be definitely different. Roll it up around the tubes and bungie it up onto the rack (I'm kinda gonna miss the rack comments but I'll get over it:D ), or it could be removable but I like my idea better. You are crafty, can you macramé?
If you could have seen the Super-strut episode. First time meeting fuser and NLW (as well as NLWHS - aka as fuser calls her NameLessWonder'sHotSister) was in a torrential downpour in my driveway at about 8pm, getting dark, trying to show them the Super and the baja project as well as the now-gone Blueberry (Beetle for Chrissy). I had complete strut, wheel, brakes, etc assemblies for someone fuser knows, can't remember who. They were about 80-100lbs each and I helped him put them on the roof of the pickle. Yeh, and I'm just soooooo tall
I think they got stuck on the way home turning around to get gas.

no no, we got stuck filling up the tank on the side of the road. pulled too far onto the shoulder to avoid getting hit by traffic. we got out tho, and I don't think the girls ever had to leave the car. just took an hour cause the clutch was slipping and the FI was fudged up. oh that clutchis back in my car now(replaced it, blew up, new one), wonder why I have issues now? sure I coulda bought a new one, but it got me to utah and back, not gonna argue on that price.
oh yeah thats the jack I meant, and its hard for me to tell you waht its caleld when i don't konw what its called, was gonna google it and link in here, but sneaks wins on time. I need to buy one of those. I was thinking on the rope ladder, if you do it, have some Vs welded to each end of the pole, so it holds the ladder away from the bus body so you can climb it easier. otherwise you need some way to hold the top of the ladder away from teh bus body so the rungs aren't flat on the side or you wont be able to get your tows in. It could be done eaisly and cheaply, if the rope ladder doesnt work out we weld bars to the ropes, voila normal ladder, I;'m willing to try anything once, then again to try and fix what i fudged up, then one more time cause of the principal of the thing, and again cause it pissed me off. but thats it, no more tries.
sorry that kinda got away from me there. so t-fest, think jake will be painted by then? this weather down here is no fun, i assume its just as bad near you. The little lady will be in town that weekend, so we expect you to make a showing with atleast one car at the show, I am leaning towards two myself, bboudy may have to drive in the SWB.
oh and the parts were for gary, I think he wanted me to get the rims out of his yard last time we spoke, which was probably in the spring. bboudy could use em after what happened to his wheel...

...for the record fuser, it's nice to say "I'll get back to you" instead of letting the person just keep asking...*cough*
That's a snazzy looking thing, and IT'S AFFORDABLE. That makes me so happy, it's so much cheaper than I thought. Thanks a bunch. I will get one.
Vs on a rope ladder sound smart, but not very removable. Maybe I could just clamp it something instead? (Just how stable are these roof racks? I'm assuming it wouldn't be smart to put my weight on them.) Or I could just clatter around like a crazy person trying to get my toes in and bouncing off the side of Jake. It would be sad if I banged up his paint, though. Fuser is more persistent than I; if after four tries the ladder isn't working, I will certainly concede defeat and get one of those sharp, injury-inducing metal ones.

Tractor Supply store...it's like a candy store to hypoglycemics. So much cool stuff at little $$, mate it with Harbor Freight, stick it across the street from me instead of another retarded car wash and I'd be in heaven. And broke. There's a TSC in Ossipee an hour or so north of me, the same town that has this old German junkyard. I think a field trip is required. Plus, since it's NH...no tax.
My thought on the rope ladder thing - skip the V thingies and just make a second set of mounts or clamps on the bumper to secure it. If done right, it can hold it tight enough for no swinging or scratching Jake's skin but quick and easy to undo once no longer needed. I'm thinking a couple of studs with wingnuts pointing up and the bottom rung with a matching holes in it would be sufficient, almost like I have for my rear shovel mount on the baja (which you haven't seen but fuser has). A couple of tube U's on the back of the rack to store it would work. I have it in my mind, I'll see if I can translate it to something graphic. As for the weight-bearing ability of the rack? More than you'd think. Definitely plenty strong enough to support you, you aren't exactly 'big boned.'
Fuser, I'll bring those FI pieces along. Regardless of what else happens, I know the 'burban will be making the trip, either as the main\only vehicle or as a tow vehicle. Space will note be an issue even if I bring stuff to get rid of while I'm down there. What's the entry fee, do you know? And at least after that first time of getting stuck, you figured out if you call someone...they will actually show up.
Unless you can't remember where the hell you are to begin with.

Off you feel like adding some metalwork, you could skip the rope vs metal ladder question and just have ladder-type steps cut out, and have pockets welded in. It would give you a ladder you'd only be able to hit yourself with from inside the bus.

Thanks for the idea Dave, but I'm not sure my metal skills are up to it but it does sound cool.

I wish I knew how to do metalwork like that, but I think I'll have to go for the rope for now.
A purple Sunday is a good Sunday. I can't wait to see it. Post pictures when you're done?

well if you want to take ashot at it, my bus is now officially experimental in nature. i am doing my clutch today as everyone persuaded me its a better idea than making the rims fit (still not convinced, but my engine is on the ground now) so I really want to test out my rear tow hook, when is a god day for an offraod trip after transporterfest?

If your bus is now experimental, does that mean I can splatter-paint it?
