Tough break Ecdez. But all the hard work you put into it actually has paid off for you, in the fact you discovered the faulty tank.
It's like a consulation prize of sorts.
Also, this thread is a great benefit for those of us who are doing the same thing. I guess I assume too many things, like, 'the tank is basically fine, just a little surface rust'. Now I know to thoroughly inspect the tank.

Well if you need one 67 T1 I know where we can go and take a suspension off and get one.67 T1 wrote:Tough break Ecdez. But all the hard work you put into it actually has paid off for you, in the fact you discovered the faulty tank.

O.K. fellas. I made a mockup of different size tanks this weekend to see what will fit up in there and compared them to the sizes available. The standard 30" long will not fit and the next size down is the 26"
. 10" diameter looks like it will fit, but only at the 26" length. Unfortunatelly, this is only 8.8 gals, and since I drive 64 miles roundtrip to work, that won't be enough.
If anybody knows a good supply for gas tanks with more variety in sizes, let me know.
Oh, yea. I dug out the 914 front suspension this weekend and it looks like everything will fit, it's just going to require more fabrication that I'm willing to put into it at the moment. I'll save that project for another day.

I'll keep an eye out, and I may still have a tank for you. What's the story with the 914 suspension? Which pieces are you thinking about? Because I believe some 911 parts will work on the 914, and if that's the case...

Thanks for looking out for me.
I was thinking about slapping the whole front suspension under there, minus the steering box. My plan was to make a T from 1" x 3" steel box tube to bolt to the factory mounting holes, then everything would be mounted to that. The immediate problems I saw were that the struts were about 10" too short. You would either have to make an extender, or a bracket to bolt to the body somewhere that would hold a body clip from the 914 where the strut mounts to (which I happen to have by the way). The other problem is that the torsion bar tubes are about 2" too close to clear the spare tire well. The suspension would have to be mounted lower, or clearance the body for it to match. Either way, I'm ready to drive so this major surgery will have to wait a while.
The early 911 front suspension is almost exactly the same as the 914, just 5 lug instead of 4. I saw a video the other day where someone put a 911 front suspension under a Ghia
. It looked good too.

The 914 suspension is less advanced than the 412 late suspension. It is also lighter in capability. With the amount of fabrication you will need to do...you will still be left with having to find parts that are not available. The ball joints of the 914 are flat out too light in load handling to work with the front end of a 412 ..safely. If you guys can hang loose for not too long...maybe February....I can start making kits for the front end. I have just devised a part that I am installing on my car soon, that will get rid of the radius arm donut bushings and the plastic centering ring. It uses the rear control arm bushing and bracket (urethane) from a rabbit golf
really nice....much better control. I will start taking pictures in about a week of the making of a front strut unit with Audi 4000/quantum GR2 cartridge and a canibleized rabbit strut body grafted into the 411/412 strut body. I have also devised a simple mod that is about 30 minutes of work with the T-piece out of the car...to allow up to 5* of castor adjustment. It requires 1 spot weld on each side. Ray
