Everyone needs to realize that when you look at the USA Type 1-3 market, you are looking at a market that is decades old. Things like headers were developed many years ago. Look at an original EMPI catalog from the late 60s, they had headers back then.
Now, here in the USA, the Type 4 conversion has become popular in the last 5 years or so, at least for the street scene. (The Type 4 has long been a favorite in the desert racing scene.) So, 5 years vs. 40 years? That's why you can get a merged header for a Type 3 or a merged header with heater boxes for the Type 1.
Right now, we are all early adoptors. We are the trailblazers. Twenty years from now people are going to look back and wonder in amazement how we did the conversions without all of the choices they have and how the prices were higher.
If you want to be a innovator, this is the time. Joe L. will always be credited with developing the DTM, something he created to fill a void. If you see something that needs to be designed to make this conversion easier or perform better, do it yourself or find someone who can.
So if this A-1 header doesn't suit your need (different chassis, etc.), and you are close to SoCal, have him make a custom header.
For instance, if you have a Type 4 powered Type 3, take it down and have him make a header that suits your needs. If you don't like the Cal-Look style header and want the Sidewinder style for your GL Bug or maybe a KG, have him design one. The more varied models he has designed, the more choices we as a community have.
Tiger is a great guy to have in our corner. He's willing to work with us all to develop great systems. Trust him with your beloved Type 4 engine. I know I will buying my exhaust systems from him, and will probably have him design for another project.
Sorry about the length of this post, but I want to be sure that everyone realizes that this isn't the end, but actually the beginning. Keep saving those pennies and spread the word. Drive your car regularly, attend shows and cruises, and if someone asks about your engine, let them know why you spent that $$$ to get a Type 4 in there.

Jut Like I thought
Like I Said I was not trying to piss anyone off, and I sure wasn't trying to discredit Tigers work.
I too Believe that this is all great. I cannot wait for the Volume to go up. It just looks Like I am going to have to save alot longer than I want to in order to get my Type 4 on the road.
I am fairly happy with my 1776 for the time being. I jsut wish I knew why she was running a little hot. But I finally have my 1.7 Type 4 and I need to tear it down and Rebuild it to the best of my ability over time, and then I will convert My VW to type 4.
I have been serving our country for Almost 10 years now. I know what sacrifice is as well. I have spent months up on the Flight Deck With Turning airplanes that are unforgiving, in the 120 degree Heat while serving in the Gulf. All On a ship away from my kids and my VW. Away from my wife, and my home, to protect the american way, and our freedom.
I know Sacrifice.
But that is another post for a different type of forum. I know Hard Work.
I just don't Know how to save.
But I am slowly learning.
I hope That I haven't blackballed myself. I'd hate to lose the Knowledge that Is here to gain.
I was just trying to point out that this still isn't as inexpensive as I was hoping. That is all, nothing else. I'll get over it.

Been there and done that as well. Two wespacs, a year in Okinawa, 3 In fligh emergencies and 5 lost buddies..... 105 degree heat in Korea living in a tent for 3 months under a Mosquito net and then back there in January to see it drop below 10 degrees... Then 4 months in Kuwait..
There is a big difference however and I know from experiencing both. Serving our country is much more important than testing and designing VW parts, but at the end of the day I was proud to do both....
Many days here I leave the shop alot more whipped than I did as a Helo Mech/crewchief... Atleast there I knew that I'd always have food to eat and somewhere to sleep. Life on the outside is a whole lot different when you make your own bread..
A word of wisdom, never work for yourself unless you are independantly wealthy and need something to keep you busy!

I have a saying for that too: A week off is followed by an off week!MASSIVE TYPE IV wrote:Yep!
Then you get weekends off, holidays off and paid vacation... Here a vacation is more of a pain than its worth. I took 10 days off and since I have been back I have worked 5 , 14 hour days trying to catch up!

I have not received it yet..
Should be here this week and I will test it then on a 2056 that I have to dyno anyway, next week I'll test it on a 2270.
I also received a pair of Turbo Thomas systems for comparison and I have a BAS and Tangerine as well..
All I need now is one of the systems from FAT, does anyone have one to send me for a day or two?
