Still need a fuel tank Ecdez?

Post by MGVWfan »

I'm planning on a visit to my local Pick-n-Rip junkyard tomorrow, I'll check out the fuel tank in a '71 411 4-door that should still be out there. Sometimes they puncture the fuel tanks in cars in this yard for some unknown reason, so it may be useless, but I'll check anyway and let you know if it's decent (no rust, no holes).

Didn't get to go this past weekend...

Post by MGVWfan »

Well, I didn't get to ye olde junqueyard Saturday. I was busy replacing the left driveshaft assembly in the '94 Voyager (argh!). If nothing dies on me, this weekend I have to go, I've got a return on a starter before it expires!

Well Ecdez, I went to the junkyard today, no joy on the gas tank, sorry! :( The 411 had a big hole punched in the bottom by the yard. When I asked why they do that, the guy said it's the only way they can be sure the tank's safe. Well, I don't know about that, every tank I've ever seen can be drained somehow else that's not destructive. I'd suspect liability concerns...

I did get a good set of big fat Eber hot air hoses for the Nomad, though...and a good TPS for the parts stash.

Thanks for checking. Actually, a few day ago, my aluminum sausage came in. I'll be putting it in as soon as I fix the daily driver (S10 clutch slave cylinder  ). I'll post some pics when I get it in.

Thanks again!

Finally decided to get off my lazy butt and take some pictures. Unfortunately I could'nt find a size to fit in the factory location so untill another option arises, it's mounted in the trunk. Aside from the holes for the mounting bolts, I had to drill a 1" hole for the fuel line to go through.

Thats not a gas tank!...thats a beer keg! Busted! .

Actually...thats all right! Its one of those things. If its the difference between being able to drive the car...or not at all.....it works out as good as it can. Ray

How long did it take before you emptied that keg?

Great solution.

Was the tank completely shot beyond welding new metal in?

The more I cleaned the tank, the worse it got. Apparently the rust was holding it all together. If I were to take it from where it is now and replace only what is rusted through, about 15º of the tank would be new metal. However, the tank is very thin in other places that I feel would have to be repaired to be condsidered safe. If I replaced all that, it would be about 40º new metal  ! For the time being, I feel much safer with the shiny suasage  .
