Here is a list of the bulbs used on a 73/74 Thing

These bulb numbers are commonly available at nearly any auto parts store.

Are the LEDs worth that much more money?

There are a number of sources for standard 12 volt LED autmotive bulbs. I plan to change my bulbs over eventually. I think the site you posted might be charging a bit much. Every once in a while I do a web search looking for the bulbs at a good price.

Also, good-to-know-wise they point out that:
"For best results the LED color should be the same as the lens color. As an example: a red lens will filter out all but the red portion of the light so if the light is all red, none or very little light will be blocked by the lens."

That is a great site you posted. Those are the best prices I have seen. Also the bulbs sure look like thye are good quality. I also like the advise about using the same color bulb as the lens color. I have been seriously thinking about getting clear front turn signal lenses and using amber 1157 LED bulb. I have that set-up on my Ford Ranger adn really like the look and the function.

The LED website also states:

"Turn signal issues with LED bulbs
LED brake/tail lamps will not flash with thermal flasher units due to their extremely low current draw. These installations will require an electronic flasher unit, available in our car bulb shopping category (for some vehicles) or at your auto parts store.
Try to find flashers designed to work with LED bulbs, they will say "LED compatible". Often HEAVY DUTY flashers will also work with LED bulbs. "

Do our cars have thermal flasher units?

Good information. It makes sense that the LEDs would not draw enough current ot activate the contacts in the flasher.

Yes our flashers are thermal. Definately not an electronic flasher in 73/74...

Check out the most recent announcement from Phillips Lighting in collaboration with AppleComputers. The LED SmartBulb. $60ea. It turn on in the dark when a person enters the room and shut off when you leave. They are user adjustable for lighting color, When you walk out the front door all the smart led bulbs shut off. They can be set like an alarm clock to turn on gradually to awaken you gently. They use very little electricity and last forever.
