AWD BUG

Post by chug_A_bug »

hey hey guys just wanted to put my Idea out there I got a 69 bug and I have a shock 1600 in it right now but I have another motor and trans that I'm going to build up . then drop it in my car then I want to take out my stocker build that one to the same spec and put it in the front to make an AWD bug for Auto crossing and just to kill those rice runners so all I'm asking is for any different Ideas to mounting this front motor and trans I was just going to take the frame horns and mount them some how to the fron and cut holes and do all that I have to do, so any help would be sweet thanks.

That seems like it would be very difficult to sync up...

There was a guy one here who had an AWD bug, he had a modified nose cone with an output shaft that ran a driveshaft out the front and ran (I think) a Vanagon front diff...that would probably be easier...

You are going to use 2 transmissions? I am trying to figure out where the room is going to come from to put the other motor in the front. Either the front motor is going to be on your lap or sticking out the front of the car with the ring and pinion flipped. How do you shift two manual transmissions? There is an emense amount of work to get a custom front suspension and steering to work well enough to race.

In all honesty, you are probabaly going to end up with a very expensive pile of parts and a lot of regrets if you go this route. The best option in my opinion is to utilize some type of vanagon synchro driveline of maybe audi or subaru?

hey thanks for your input I'm really starting to think that I should just put the Audi tranny, but how would that work can you tell me, is there an adapter that I can use and then just put the Audi trans in and run it to the front and Fab something to hold the drive line???and can I use Audi brakes then ? would it be wise to just cut the front end off and make a tube chassie?? and put a Fiberglass clip on? you think that I can get away with that on the Street this also will be a Street car too Your thoughts?? thanks guy? and how much you think it would cost to make this happen??

Why not find an old ww2 schwimmwagen or Commanderwagen desert beetle and use that ?... :P

In any case, it's definitely been done before on Rallycross cars over here in europe in the 1980's. The cars were based on the 1302/3. Were equal to porsche 959s , audi quatro S4s and fords RS200 - All originally designed for the gruppe B rally series that was banned cos the cars were just too fast. I have some footage on betamax tapes somewhere. These were probably the fastest bugs ever built (for circuit racing), with over 500bhp motors in the tail. (subaru 4 cam heads on type 1 block and twin turbos)

I think they used porsche's 4wd transmission. And had BMWs rear diff and drive shafts on the front end.

Why is it essential for you to have AWD on a bug?

Anything is possible. Go for it. I've seen some really amazing two-engined cars over the years. Michael Schumacher(F1) drove a Mercedes econobox built up with two engines and said it was the coolest car he ever drove. Here's one site of a Scirocco with two 16Vs www.duorocco.com In one of the videos he smokes a lighter, more powerful 911--twice! I've had the idea to build up a rabbit with two very powerful electric motors and two transmissions for Autocrossing. I suggest keeping both the transmissions the same in your car to simplify things with a cable shifter controlling both. A fox trans up front and a bug trans out back 'could' work but the shifters would be a nightmare. And, in case anyone's wondering, both engines don't have to be the same nor the gearing(but it helps). It took me a while to figure this out, the above mentioned Scirocco has one 1.8 up front and a 2.0 out back. Think of it as each engine is trying to push half the weight of the car, not fight with each other. Also, I suggest building up one of these engines and trans. first and running the car periodically for fun to keep your interest in it, doing all of this at once cutting up the front of the pan and doing a tube chassis and substructure would eat up many, many months for the weekend mechanic(steering, caster and camber are crucial to get right, too). Another suggestion, a super beetle with Golf subframes may be easier to setup as the strut towers are already built into the car(look over in the conversions section at the 1.8T Audi swap). Good luck.

Great idea. These cars were something else to watch
I have the tapes, and my computer accepts & encodes video input at up to DVD quality.

The only catch is that I don't have a Betamax tape player anymore
I'll see if I can find a way to do it though..............

Maybe I'll find a tape player on ebay

Yep, it's been done. AWD, that is. http://www.davesport.com/cgi-bin/davesport/old_bug.html

Two engines would be more hassle than it's worth IMO.
