'72 411 Update

Post by can86 »

As many of you know I have been making progress on the 411. It started 2 years ago when I got the car for $100 in pieces....Here's the lates update. I also want to say thank you for all of the help so far!

UPDATE: After some long hours of working on the 411 there is finally some long awated for progess.

Last summer I was able to get the car running right before going back to school. I got the newer motor in, replaced many seals throughout the engine and tranny, had the alternater and starter rebuilt...

In order to get the car in shape for the road I started with replacing all the expensive braided vacuum line throughout the engine bay. At the same time I put in the later paper element air cleaner which replaced the oil bath

The brake system needed to be gone through next. For the fronts I had the rotors turned, got rebuilt calipers, new pads, rubber lines, and had to make a few metal lines. (after a few skinned knuckles  )

Here are a few before and after pics:

The rears followed with new shoes, cylinders, springs, turned drums and some good old cleaning

It took forever to bleed the whole system, but we got all the air bubbles out and all new fluid in

Another fun and greasy part to rebuild was the axles. This car has pretty low mileage so luckily the CV joints didn't look too bad, they just need new boots.
gotta have fun in the garage

Once those were done she was ready to be put into gear for the first time in who knows how many years. The first drive went really smooth, just a little scary with those unseated brakes. There was a slight bogging down from idle, which was caused by an erratic PCV valve. The tranny shifts pretty good throughout all the gears. I plan to double check the adjustments on the throttle valve switch, and the manifold pressure regulater to get everything working even better. It's just nice to have the car driveable.

Here's a short clip of it's first journey into gear and on the road

Albert,
I put in two gas filters: One before the pump and one before the motor. I had to clean out the metal lines alot because they were pretty nasty from sitting so long. I just put two in for now to be safe and make sure the system is as clean as possible...

Not sure if that would be hard on the pump, but I wouldn't think so once the system is charged. It's just there to help clean the old dirty system...

As far as speed is concerned, The 411 has been up to 60mph on a back road for a few minutes. It actaully handled very well and didn't pull in any directions.

Braking:
Being all new brakes, they are still seating. Normally, the second pump of the pedal they firm up and the car stops nicely. The only squeak I have is from the anti-rattle clips rubbing the outside of the rotor, but's it has almost disappeared. I plan to probably bleed the brakes again and possibly rebuilt the master...

Tranny:
The tranny seems to be working pretty well. The first-second shift is a little rough sometimes, but the second-third is always smooth. The downshift is kind of similer. Sometimes you won't feel it and sometimes its a decent clunk.

This is my first time ever in one of these cars with an auto, so i'm not sure how it should be. Luckily, everytime I drive the car it seems to be driving better and better.

I'll be sure to get some more videos and what not together 8)

This is pretty much how mine works, both before and after I resealed it. I guess it is normal.

 must be, I took it out yesterday and it was driving really nice...I think it just needs some miles for things to start working again after all these years

Actually...the hard shift is "common" to this trnsmission....but not normal. What generally causes it is the normal wear and internale leakage of pressure within the system...and/or wear and spring degradation in pressure modulating points. If everything is generally still in reasonable shape....adjustment of the main pressure at the modulator valve is generally all that is required. You will need some correctfittings and gauges and the bentley type 3 brown book to adjust this. It will generally smooth it all out. Ray

Kinda what I figured. I've been reading some back posts of you explaining that adjustment before...I just need to get the goodies to do it.
