1.5qt oil sump add on??

Post by vwbill »

So why is adding the 1.5qt sump to the motor so good? They seem to leak and I can't see how it helps the cooling when the oil cooler area is still the same?? bill

You don't add a deep sump for increased cooling. That's not what they are designed for. A deep sump is designed to increase the oil capacity of the engine, to primarily to keep the oil pick up tube submerged in oil when accelerating really fast or cornering really hard.

Think about taking a banked freeway interchange at a really high speed. All of the oil in the sump will be pushed up against the side of the case. This can cause the pick up tube to pick up air, which is certain death for the engine.

What if you had a drag racer? When you leave the start line, all of the oil is pushed up against the back of the case. Same thing, the oil tube is no longer submerged and it sucks in air.

The myth that oil sumps are for cooling has been around for a long time. If you are having cooling issues, find out what's causing it. The deep sump isn't the band-aid.
