I have only personally seen two in all my travels in this country. Both were total basket cases....2 door sallons with factory four speed. Sad. Nice cars. Ray

Hi Guys! I have one! It's VIN number is 3057 (or something close to it - it's late, dark and raining - I'm not going out to check the number. It was made in August of 1968 (thus a 1969 Model). It was shipped to the USA via Vancoover (spelling???) to Seattle to a Dealer who apparently (so the story goes) knew Heinz Nordhoff.

Anyway, I currently have it up on Jacks to rebuild the front end and flush the gas tank out. If I can figur out how to upload photos to this site (I am not a computer whizz), I'll do so.

It is "Toga White" (and lots of primer) with red interior. It has the original dual Solex Carbs, 1700 engine (engine is V code - but I forget the number, but it is about 1000, again, I ain't going out in the rain to check it). It's a four door with a standard 4 speed trans. The trans is from a 1972 as the origninal owner told me he had a the original rebuilt three times and it kept "breaking." So he had a new one placed in '72 and no problems since.

Nice 411

It's look quite tidy and solid. Nice bug eye headlights. Is it the one up for sale for a while on Club Vee Dub Sydney Website? How much is worth in Aussie? How many of this in Aussie? My one is red color.

Yes this is the one that was for sale on the Club v dub site...It's now mine. It's a 69 model with the original 1700 donk,4 speed manual. Motor is a basket case so will need repair or replacement. There are 2 known in the state i live in (Queensland) including mine and both are manuals. There are 4 others that i know of in Australia and they are automatics and not drivable. I don't know what model/years the others are....I've only heard about them, not seen them. They were all private imports in Australia as they were not sold here by VW. A big THANX to Mackaymanx for dragging my rustbucket, oil dripping/gushing ugly motherless goat of a car home for me!!!

Ps. VW411L....got any parts ???!!!!!!

Rare 411

Post by VW411L »

Good to see more of these rare 411 on the road. Keeping them running.
Not many either in New Zealand. As I know they are only 3 or 4 early 1969 411 in here. Two has been wrecked for parts.

Please keep posting when you go along on your progress. Will be interesting to see it.

I'm on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and have had 2 69's.
One was parted years ago and the other was saveable 10 years ago but we let it slide for too long and is beyond help and am parting now.
Both were originally white and I think were sold in New Guinea and brought in privately into Australia.
I think there were 1 or 2 which VW AUS imported for promotional purposes but otherwise a handfull of private imports would make total numbers in Australia under 20 at a guess.
Of these remaining survivors I knew or know of ......
Simon Glens 411 originally from Toowoomba.
The one Ray Vanderkly had for sale in NSW (You may have one of these 2 NQ boys).
There is a 412 sedan in SA was on AVD.
Steve Muller has a 411 wagen.
Another 412 in victoria.
The 2 69 411's I wrecked
And I have a 412LE which was brought in by the German ambassador as his private car in the day.
Type 4's you can count on both hands in AUS.

On Tom's website (www.type4.org) the chassis numbers run from 419000001 to 419023236 (production in 1968) and starts with the number 419100000 for production year 1970 (from 1 aug 1969).

So at least 23.236 were made in 1968, but how many were build from 1 jan 1969 tot 31 july 1969 will be a guess.....

HeyFrog...I've got the 411 that used to belong to Ray Vanderkly...do you have a manual gearbox for one of these???Mine is trashed and it is currently running a beetle box...don't suppose you have a good 2 litre donk floating around all those split screens do you ????
