Starter is acting strange

Hey folks,
When it is cold out sometimes I turn the key and the starter cranks merrily away, and then the engine catches fire but the starter keeps going at it, even when I turn the key off, even when I take the key out. After a few seconds it shuts off. Then I try again and it starts right up. Like I said it only does this some of the time, and then only when it's cool/cold out. Seems to me maybe it's just a cranky old solenoid showing its age on a cold morning. Or is there something in the ignition switch itself to worry about?
many thanks
