Hoping this is the forum to answer a question. I recently picked up an engine from the boneyard out of a 72 bus. I want the early style exhaust to replace my 78 cali style on our westy.

My query stems around the rear hanger. It is plate-like and mounts to the case on four bosses. There is a hole in the middle of the mounting bolt area for the nose of the oil pump to stick through.

The case is a V code ( V0000814 ). My search tells me it's a from a 69 type 4 car. The heads are Q's. The exhaust (is) early bay bus because I believe that the 411/412 heater boxes do not have the alumimum heat sink on the down pipes. Correct?

I looked around for 411/412 engine mounts. I only found 70-74. They look like the type on my late bay.

The hanger bar as it came from the bus looks to have been modifided. Their is/are splice plates welded in the middle of each arm. The bus had rubber mounts bolted to the inside of the frame rails.

Are the T-4 hangers tube steel like my Bus? Could there be a US and Euro spec? Dunno.

There is no real urgent need to get to the bottom of this except for the curiosity.

I happen to have V case in my 412. It is different than the other cases by material (alu-mag) and the rear hanger mounting.

This case is made for -69 411 rear hanger only. It also has a little bit different fan housing, which doesn´t leave enough room for later style rear hanger mounting.

The V case has more material (spacing) in the rear hanger mounting points. I had to remove about 10 mm to modify the mounting points similair to later model cases. I also had to replace the fan housing with later model to get enough room for 412 rear hanger bar.

Makes sense. How this ended up in a 72 US bus I'll never know. When I remove the fan housing, I'll look for part numbers.

The fan housing has a stamped number near the coil location. It is CB001537. The housing also has a VW cast number below the fan. It is 021 119 225A. I only have bus books and manuals.

My wishful thinking wants to me to believe the CB001537 housing is meant for a bus application because it matches the CB engine code for the 1700 bus.

But I can understand what you said about the housing being for the 411.

Sorry my insufficient language skills

I ment that originally the V cases, that were installed to -69 411, has had different kind of fan housing, which has a little bit "thicker" bottom area. it makes the room between the oil pump and fan housing so tight, that the 412 or bus style rear hanger bar doesn´t fit there.

If you want to have space for 412 or bus style rear hanger bar, you must modify that area between oil pump and fan housing correspond to later models of -69 411.

I cannot tell which fan housing you have there but with the original V case fan housing, the bus or 412 hanger bar doesn´t fit.

In addition to fan housing you must machine the case rear hanger mounting points down about 10 mm if you use original 412 or bus rear hanger parts.

For me it was easy to see the difference, because I had different kind of systems to compare. If you get another fan housing and all the rear hanger parts from bus or 412, you´ll see what I mean.

I have the 411 -69 fan housing in my carage. if you need, I can check the part number to confirm is your fan housing same kind.

I'll keep checking around for part numbers. I'll look on our 78 Westy also.
