wiring the voltage regulator

Post by orangesuper »

Ive got a 1970 bay that had the engine in parts in boxes when I got it with pencil sketches from the previous owner of wiring(I dont think it was running when he got it)...well there was no voltage regulator in the car and either the p/o or the p/p/o bypassed the voltage regulator altogether. power wire from the battery went straight to the screw on terminal on the generator. the blue wire that goes to the dash warning light was spliced with the green wire to the push on terminal on the generator. so now im left with nothing to go by and am trying to figure out how to install the voltage regulator. I picked one up today it has three hookups on either end this is how I think wiring goes someone correct me where im wrong. one end has two screw on connections for eye type connectors. one is on the mounting bracket this one gets a ground wire to the strap that holds on the generator. the other one Labled D+ gets the wire directly from the battery. on the other side of this same end is a push on connector this gets the blue wire that goes up front to the dash light. On to the opposite end... There is one set of double posts the get a large size push on connector which goes to the screw on connector on the generator. on the other side of the same end is a smaller push on connection this gets the green wire to the push on connector on the generator. I wired it like this but I the dash warning light didnt come on with the key in the on position. Take it off the green wire and ground it you get a little spark but the light still doesnt come on so maybe I wired it wrong hopefully this doesnt mean I fried my brand new regulator. I dont get why there are two large size push on terminals but only one wire I know of to connect to them. A side note the engine is dual port I thought 70s came with singleport 1600s so maybe its not the original engine?

under closer inspection my generator looks like it might actually be an alternator which I fear may change everything including which regulator I should have.

A genny is the same size from the pulley front. An alternator has a step in the case.

Also, make sure the engine has the bolt holes for the mustache bar.

engine checks out with the number B5183129 to be from 1970 so maybe someone just rebuilt it with dual port heads. It is definetly an alternator though. So what does that mean in terms of a voltage regulator didnt some alternators have built in voltage regulators?

http://www2.cip1.com/pdfs/CIP1-ACC-C10-5750.pdf instructions for installing those generator to alternator conversion kits everyone sells apparently it was wired right to begin with green wire gets spliced to blue wire to dash light hot wire goes on screw on terminal and here I was thinking some hack just bypassed the voltage regulator
