Anyone know what these side mouldings are?

Post by Busboy75 »

This is my 75 swedish import bus and it has got these rubber side mouldings. i have never seen them on another van does anyone know what they are? they are definately factory fitted because it has holes in the bodywork all the way down. i have been told that it could have been an airport spec bus?

I would say home made.

Sven (at least not the Swede you bought from :) )

Do the holes have factory paint covering the bores?
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

almost certain that they're not homemade. the detailing in the rubber is too good and on the other side its even shaped around the fuel filler hole. The rubbers have got tabs on the back moulded into them to fit in the holes. the reason why the section of rubber on the cab door is not dead straight is because i had to get a new door for it and of course the new one didn't have any holes in it. so instead of drilling the door i just glued this piece on. not sure about the paint because i didn't see under the rubber until after the whole van was painted. :D it looks very similar to the silver fish mouldings that i've seen on a few vans?

They are dealer installed. There are a multitude of small details from mouldings to bumpers to custom mirrors, differnt mats, horns etc......that were all actual VW offerings...but never installed at the factory. They were installed at the dealer. This way a great amount of customization could be done withoyut assembly lkine constraint. A great many of these parts were actually sourced in the 60's and 70's ....by the dealer...then submitted for quality approval to VW.....and just offered at teh delaership for new and existing customers.

In the last five years or so...VW has actually gotten back on this methodology. It comes in the form of that nifty VW magazine like VWOA sends out in the mail to every VW owner who has bout a new car in the last few years. It has chrome grills, interior parts and kits ...body mouldings, wheels ...you name it. None of them offered on the factory vehicle....though you CAN order them when you order the car. But truth be known, they are shipped in...and installed at the dealership.

I suspect your side mouldings could simply be dealer accessories. Ray
