The 411 and early 412 bumpers were esentially the same as the late type 3. The rear one is identical. The front may have a slight more curve than teh late type 3...but I believe it is hardly nocticable.
Generally the overriders came on the 411. They may have been an option...I do not know for sure.
The one from a late type 3 are almost identical and bolt right up. Ray

Those are actually a bit different than the stock 411/412 overriders. They are narrower (no big deal)...and the opening for the bumper is probably smaller....but could be opened up with a grinder I woudl bet. They might be quite nice. Ray

plumcrazee, the item you seek is an accessory kit that was originally distributed by VWOA as part #ZVW-151-817, manufactured by X-L-O Automotive Accessories. I was lucky enough to snag an NOS, in-the-box set on *b*y around 5 years ago. I saved it in my parts stash for the long-awaited resto on my 412 wagon last spring.
I would offer to sell you the set of bumper overriders that I replaced, but by the time I did the resto that set had become pretty rusty. You will probably have to go junkyard-diving for a set now. There is a guy on The Samba forum that has a junkyard in the Phoenix area with a bunch of Type 4s, and also there is a VW-only junkyard in Dade City FL that I have visited that has 8-10 Type 4s. If you're game you could try them--I have scored some good spare parts from both.
All 4 overriders are interchangeable so you only need to get 4 good ones from any bumper location. According to the mounting instructions, on the front bumper they go 12 inches to the left and right of center; on the rear bumper it is 22 inches. In addition to the 4 rubber pads (don't laugh, somebody on *b*y is trying to sell some that are missing a pad), a COMPLETE set has 4 bumper brackets with hex key adjusting screws; 4 plastic plugs (to cover the adjusting screw holes in the rubber pads); and 8 vinyl extrusion pieces to line each side of the overider where it touches the bumper.

Everybody has different taste so it seems. I personally think they're (f)ugly!
Now, the aluminium bumpers of '74 model years seen like a very cool idea

but having a set shipped is probably not funny ($$)

To the best of my knowledge....the holes for the overriders are already in all type 4 bumpers. They bolt through existing holes under the rubber strip.
Yes...i agree that teh overriders are ugly....but....sadly....in this country....I think they are a necessity. Many American drivers are not as considerate as European drivers. The first time I saw a driver using what I describe as "sonar based" parrallel parking....I nearly went back into teh house to get my handgun.
This is where unskilled drivers back into a parrallel space und keep going until they lightly tap the bumper of the car behind...then move forward and tap the one in front...then even up by backing up a few inches
