My local mechanic guy (pretty reputable) is replacing my generator. Ordered a rebuilt Generator, he put it in and told me it was only charging up to 4 volts...we thought it was defective and put another one in and this one is indicating 8 VOLTS....now of course the next one should work..hahaha (statistically) but, how can this be....he has polarized them, so he says, all of the electrical connections are right, new Regulator.....totally baffled!? is there some trick or something missing!?
my Ghia has a little condenser thing on the Generator, does the Thing need this too?

I wish I could take credit for this great web page, but ...
check out SpeedyJim's page. It even has a section on checking the genny.

No trick. No need for any condenser (perhaps one was added to your 'Ghia to reduce radio noise).
The Thing should've come with a 38A generator & regulator, like you'll find in most 1600 buses. They take unique sheetmetal, pulley ($$$), and fan hub that are different from the common 30A versions, so you can get into trouble if you don't know the difference...but there's no mismatch of parts (including the wrong amperage-rating regulator for the generator) that would account for the symptom you report.

Although I strive to collect a complete file of Thing data, folks like Marc (Master of all Things VW) posts stuff like this. There is a group of T-2 bus parts that were applied to the Thing. I never realized that the Generator and fan were part of this. Last summer I figured out the bus lower engine tin issue. Now I finally get the generator fan issue. Thanks!!
