My battery is not charging so i know that the problem is in either the voltage regulator or alternator. I have a 1978 type 2 with efi.
I do not think that i have the stock voltage regulator on because it is made in the USA, and doesnt look right. However i may wrong in thinking that this is the regulator. Where does the stock voltage regulator mount?
If the problem turns out to be the alternator what type of alternators can i use? Can i use one from a different model? In other words if i went to a junkyard what car could i pull one off that would fit in mine?

Do not exactly quote me on this but a T4 engibe should have an internally regulated alternator from the factory.
Even the new T1 Alternators are internally regulated. So the only need is when you have a generator.
My advice is to get a quality remanufactured unit. Usually they come with a lifetime warrantee as well.

If stock, it has an external regulator which mounts on the
firewall, over near the battery side.

Does the dash light come on? If not, the alternator won't begin charging,
even if all the components are OK.
