Mikerock it sounds like you are having a timing issue or did you check like Ray always says the darn screen filter in the tank. Have you put a gauge on the test tee in the left fuel rail and rev it up to see what happens? You could try the clear line on that tee and put it in a jug and see what flow rate you are getting too?? It just sounds like when I had my timing set without a tach issue. It is kinda scary and a pain watching that tach and putting your head in the bay in a 2dr model to see that mark and moving the dist.! Didn't someone also have a problem with a bad return line like that too?? Did you pull the injector connections when it's running to see if they react? I don't know if the CHT could do that if it drops outta range?? Bill
p.s.Did you clean and adjust the throttle body switch?

haha i kinda understood what you said. im kinda new to this whole vw thing. As far as timing, im pretty sure its on... the mark on the fan is at the top when the dizzy is pointing at the number one cylinder.

what would be the easiest way to check the screen filter in the tank?? im assuming your talking about the gas tank right?? which i have an issue with too, it likes to spit the gas back out the filler neck after i fill up.

Im also assuming you're talking about a fuel pressure gauge on the left fuel rail.

how exactly would i go about setting my timing???

this is what i get for working in a ford shop once.

Wow, doing a weekender motor change out!! That is a work out that will require many a pint!! I can't even get myself to pull my motor for the fourth try rebuild! That main shaft clip and details! Yiksa! You are the master! Your car does look too sweet to let her sit though!! You must be wanting to see what caused the crack issue! I think it must have been the lower rod to crack bolt since the crack is in the center of the case or do you think something got in the case? Good luck with the change out!! You are the inspiration!! Bill
p.s. Great Tattoo!

i think it might have been a valve/valve seat as the plug in number 1 cylinder is missing from the thread down  and i just asume its took the piston out and thrown a rod will strip it all down to have a look and see what parts a usable

cheers on the coments dude

Well another 412 went for a drive today! Got it washed and the battery in and after only a few turns she actually started after over a year of sitting!! She didn't sound too bad for a head leaker rebuild and idle down after a few minutes, I pumped up the tires with the foot pump(it was so hot after pumping four tires up it could have started a fire!) added a little oil and pumped the brakes and rode them and ebrake to get the crud off the surfaces and down the road I went! It actually moves out if you get on it!! I didnt get to highway speed but I'll do that tonight when there is less traffic! Glad everyone who could got out and had a ride in their 411/412's!! Hope everyone had fun!! Plumcrazee sorry to hear it was the valve seat that did you wrong!! Hope you have a good weekend with the motor swap! I had a big smile when I did some fast cornering in the neighborhood!! Have fun, Bill

Well, did the 40 to 50 mile highway speed cruise tonight at 1030ish and she drove great even with the bad rebuild head leak issue! I cruized around 65-70 and after backing in the garage I put my head in the engine bay above the motor to see how hot it was and it wasn't hot at all!! It could just be the cool night air but it felt like at that temp. it could cruize forever! I had to stop at a light before the stretch and had a crown vic next to me and honda cruizer behind me and I think they were surprised that I got off the line so fast and up to speed faster then them!!! Probably saying what was that car!! bill
