Hey, I was just browsing through the m-codes on type4.org, and saw code 220, limited slip rear differential. Did any cars make it to the U.S. with this? I don't remember if we discussed that one before. That would be too sweet...

Another interesting option was 248, ignition switch without steering lock. On one of my 412s, there seems to be no steering lock, I thought it was just broken, but maybe it has this option?

Also, I did not see anything concerning the passenger rearview mirror. Some cars just have a driver side mirror, and a plug in the threaded part on the passenger side.

Was it limited slip for automatic or manual? If manual...I have only seen about a dozen manual 411/412"s in my life. I have owned two of those I saw (sadly one was so shot I just parted it out). The others....I picked up roughly 6 of the trannys over the years from what few I have found in the junkyards. Never seen a limited slip among them. Never seen an automatic limited slip in any of the cars I have worked among. Be nice to know whats out there.

As for the passenger side mirror......I have a couple . I have had at least two cars that had them on. I need to replace the glass in them.
As you know...though a type 3 mirror will bolt right up ...and look OK....the type 4 mirrors were 411 part #'s and were unique. There is a left and right mirror.

I have so many stinkin projects to get into. I just started casting low temp metals lately at work.

It may not be ultra durable....but I "could" cast some mirror image parts from some of this material. Its ultra accurate.....relatively rigid....relatively cheap. Getting mirror glass cut and ground...is cheap. I could make these mirrors. Not sure about getting this material chromed. They would look and work great...until someone leaned on one. But then again they would not damage the door or threads. Ray

Neat, but spend your precious time and energy other more important parts Ray! The mirrors seem to survive quite well, although the glass does seem to fall out easily. I think the 412 I'm parting out has a Type III mirror on it, I'll have to check.

Yes, I had a late type 3 and it had the exact ame mirrors as my 412 has.
I bought a NOS right hand drive mirror from a guy in england, as they only have right-hand drive cars and those mirros were the standard there. Maybe a tip?

The limited slip diff would be Über cool!!
Only a few police versions survived; most were very well used and did not make restoration...Ambulance versions?? never seen one of those..

The actual type 4 mirrors..were kind of "ornate". They are slightly similar to some mirrors that came on a couple of years of ghias...but are really totally different in detail than anything else used on VW's. They are still a Hella product...but had a lot more styling down by the hinge and mount. Lower profile and more aerodynamic with a very short arm. The type 3 is the one that has the longer arm that you commonly see.
Usually when the glass got broken ....all you could find was type 3...and since they bolted right up and looked nice anyway...no one really ever complains.

got some other 412 engine bits for sale as well in the F/S section

Somewhere I thought I had #'s...but it is for sure that maybe 2000 total 2 doors with 4 speeds were shipped to the USA. Ray
