please help: gearbox question

Post by 72bus »

Hi folks
I've got a baywindow '72 and currently they're building a new type1 engine 1776cc to replace my 1600cc.
I also got a "longer" gearbox code CP... from a 2ltr type4 engine (CJ)
Does this gearbox fit my new engine?? or do I need to change something??
please help me out, because here in Holland I got all different answers

Transmissions intended to be mated to Type IV motors have a longer input shaft (it's easy to see, the "nose" at the end past the splines is noticeably longer). It will need to be replaced with one from a Type I - powered IRS bus trans, or you could just carefully shorten and bevel the end so it resembles the correct part. It's fairly easy on a bus trans since the bellhousing unbolts.
Your old starter won't work with the 2-liter trans bellhousing; if the new trans comes with a starter it should be OK with your Type I flywheel, but if not (or if you prefer to use the less-expensive early starter) you'll need to swap the bellhousing too.

I am not sure exactly what gear box you have in your 72. On the US versions (they used a 1700 T4 engine in 72) you will also find the the total length of the gear box is longer when using a later box. The extra length is all or mostly in the bellhousing to handle the beefier clutch used with the 2L engine. If you can use you original bellhousing then you may be looking at an easy bolt in, if not then there will be a slight clearance issue at the front of the tranny and you will need to shorten the shift rod slightly (or find one that matches the transmission).
