rebuild

Post by Piper »

What should a rebuild on the 1.9 cost me? I'm toying with having the local bug shop do it over the winter. I got 225 000 kms on mine, and would hate to throw a rod un expectedly next summer!

I would suggest doing it yourself if you are tooled up for it and feel capable of doing it right.

Otherwise, gowesty.com or Boston Bob.

Yes, that will hurt, but it will only hurt once.

Having it done locally by J. Schmoe/VW epurt can hurt many times, and end up costing far more in the long run.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

I'm certainly not tooled up, or capable of a rebulid. I'm new to all of this mechanical stuff. What I know I've learned from trial and error, and asking lots of stupid questions. At this point tune ups, and oil changes are my limit. Has anyone dealt with Johns Bug Shop in Niagara Falls for engine work?

I agree with Pile.

Boston Bob has a good reputation.

I am not saying your local shop cannot do a good job, but is an unknown to a degree from our perspective.

John could definately build you a great type 1 motor. Although the wasser is similar, I'm not sure he works on them.

I can build you a higher-output wbx, custom if you like, tailored to your driving needs. I also have a lightly-used 2.2 wbx available right now for a grand less than a fresh rebuild:

Piper, I'm going to recomend you look in to the shipping of Tencents motor. Get over to thesamba.com, a lot more info on the water cooed vanagon engine. A usual rebuild by an average shop is going to give you a disapointing motor. They are going to use replacement pistons that give you too low a compression ratio, go see the Gowety piston story for full details. Tencents is a wealth of knowledge and is highly regarded on thesamba. He has helped countless people, has a vast knolwedge of these motors and has a thread "engine porn" showing his build. He modifies the oil return in the case, seems to take extra care in making it just right. The pistons he used in that motor are Gowesty"s, 800$ for a set. He can give you all the particulars. It is just broken in , his reason he's selling is cause he's inovative and trying something else presently. I'd probably grab it myself except I'm looking at building it myself as I'm able, but it will probably be a clone of his. You can go from your present 1.9l to his 2.2l and keep all your injection, just swap out the long block, an increase I'm sure you will welcome.

yeah, I'm just window shopping right now, I think my wife would light the bus on fire if I spend any more cash on it before spring! I'm actually reasonably happy with the performance of my old tired engine, the only time I curse it is going up the escarpment! Next year I'll look more seriously into actually rebuilding it.
