Maximum Stroke

Post by Mr. Electric Wizard »

I know there is clearance issues with the cam when you get to a certain stroke, but what is the maximum?
Is it possible to use a 84mm stroke in a 1.9 case?

The biggest WBX crankshaft that I have been able to find so far is 82mm.
I am guessing that is probably at about the limit in terms of stroke.

**edit**
I see that Demello makes an 84!
Anybody installed an 84mm crank in an Oxyboxer?

The same issues with long stroke apply to a wasser as a type-1 , the camshaft is in the way. Beavering the cam or small rod journals are the limit.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Gene Berg made a bunch of 86-90 stroke WBX cranks in the 80s. I'm sure they are all sold by now. If Jeff Denham can get a 92 stroke in a non dropped cam case, why can't it be done in a WBX?

I have just recently fitted a 86 mm DPR crank into a late 1,9L case and surprisingly little cleance work was needed  I have not looked at the crank to cam cleance issure yet.

Sweet!
So more than likely, some clearanced rods and small journals will need to happen right?

DPR would'nt make the WBX crank with more than 82 mm stroke without
semi fullcircle counterweights.

2" Chevy rod journals on the crank and CB race rods.

Good call on the CB race rods...
Looks like 84mm stroker and 5.7" race rods should work out nicely.

ANyone tried a 90 T1 crank?

Might be cool to do a "square" 90.5 P&C x 90 crank.

Guys lets make it clear are we building a water cooled engine or a aircooled engine? With a air cooled engine (using WBX block) yes you can do 90mm crank it will fit, But how much hassle for what little gain? As far as a watercooled its a bit differant story as you have to keep everything in the confinds of the stock cylinders & waterjackets. Unless you make special cylinders that are longer, Or pistons with differant comp. heights or both, weld the jackets of the block. Use shorter rods? Air cooled long stroke engines up to 90 mm are piece of cake compaired to a water cooled long stroke. Rolf is it a water cooled engine or a air cooled?? I have clearanced the 1.9 for a 88mm stroke w chevy style rods & 90mm could be done. Even better use the 2.1 block it has a higher roof again the cam must be clearanced (notched) not turned on a lathe. Thanks Rocky

What's the largest stroke you can make from a 1.9L crank?

Are u going to put it in a watercooled engine? Its the same as a 69mm bug crank so I would guess with the correct welding it could be made in to a 86mm if you spend the $$$$.

I think the biggest I have seen is 84 from DMS or DPR. But they are spendy.

I would advise getting a T1 crank and putting it in the T5. With Rocky's adapter shims it should be olay to fit in.

Rocky you have an e-mail from me.

Yes it's going to be watercooled which as you know is a 5 bolt. How is it the same as the T1 other than stroke?

If that is the case, to whom would you recommend I send it to for stroking to 82 or 84mm?

Is there a way to use a ready-made T1 crank (billet or otherwise) and still be a WBX?

What tranny are you going to use? If you are going with a 901 or 915 then I would recommend sticking with the 228mm 914 flywheel. But if you are staying with a VW tranny then just get a T1 crank.

Personally I like DMS, but I have never heard bad things about either company.

If you want just give a shout on my cell and we can kick the can about it ;)
