My type 4 what to do what to do

I have 2 of these cars and am trying to decide if I want to sell them or put time into them. One is in decent shape few dings, needs a paint job and the front seats recovered. The car also needs a motor but I took everything off the car and cleaned it screws and all. The other is just a shell but perfect and redone with stock primer and under coating ready for paint and trans motor stuff like that. If I do decide to sell what do you think I could get for them?

Years? Bodystyles? For better or worse, from what I've seen, the market and value for anything not in original, mint condition seems to be very limited. You get into these cars because you love them, there is negligible money to be gotten back compared to other classic VW's the last 5 years or so.
P.S., if you have a 411 2dr. sedan/coupe, let me know!

Yes, sooner or later with all VW air cooled cars....they will be worth more. But for now, the movement is very limited. Most people are simply not up for the challenges of getting parts....though some things are getting better. These people are categorized as "simple, lazy bug owners"
These cars are far ahead in most respects than a bug....handling, heat, comfort, coolness and of course a type 4 engine to start with.
They are worth the hassle. Let us know what you have. I have been in the position of multiple 411/412's before and at some point you may have to make a choice to keep one.....we can council you!
If you have a 2 door with 4 speed with good body...needs engine, has transmission and has all glass and needs new inerior.....versus a driving wagon that needs a little less work but is moe or less complete.....then the two door always wins in my book. They are rarer.
But its hard....very hard. I have owned and driven a 411 wagon, a 412 wagon, a 411 4 door and a 412 4 door, and at one time had a 411 2 dor so bad I had to strip it and scrap it....and I curently have a 412 two with 4 speed under long term restoration that I drove for years.
They are all very nice, and drive well. If you have two different types...keep them both and take it slow. You will thank us in the end. Ray

Hey, ubercrap, what's your interest in this car? Have a look at our jewel, otherwise known as 'Old Blue Eyes' in the Intro section and my other posts.

I took a look at your blurb in the intro. That car is sweet and straight. It "looks" like it may have at one time been "Alaska blue metallic".
It should be an automatic and unless it is past august of 1971 in manufacture date (which would make it a 1972)..it should have a one of a kind (over here) three spoke steering wheel.
They are good cars! I had one just like it (but a 72) in the same color...a few years back.
There are a couple of upgrades that are worth the money while you are working on it. Find the steering knuckles from a 412...and change to the later 412 calipers and rotors. Also, drop in a rear sway bar taken from a 4 door if you fnd one in the junk yard. It bolts right up....holes are already there.
Look into some minor improvements to the struts when you get around to replacing them.....which will sooner or later happen. You are in a unique position...possibly...that this car may have the very earliest struts which do not have actual ball bearings in them. Which on one hand is not as good for returning to center steering...but last longer and can cheaply be improved to handle better.....and is easier than moving to later model struts.
Let us know what you need here on the forum and we can help you find it. Ray

Ray, you are a true '411' pearl, find and fan! (not to mention 'pro'). Thanks for that post and invitation. Work is in progress right now and I think I just found someone back East who has some precious 411 parts on a junked 1971! I'll be getting some pics and other details. Even that rarest of all rarities: a master cylinder (supposedly works).
My wife has threatened to cut my balls off if I don't get her beloved 411 running again (or worse)
so I'm running as fast as I can (afford to).
Hey, Ray, does that duct tape in my photo of the engine compartment cover the intake boot? Is the part there but sealed with tape or is it missing altogether?
I'll be posting here on progress and need for advice and parts.

I'm not sure what you mean? Are you talking about the original poster's car/cars, the Type 4 in general, or my comment about the 411 2dr. sedan/coupe?
Your car looks nice and straight. From a design perspective, the wagons (squareback sedan I think they were officially classified- the bus was labeled a "wagon" I believe) are the best balanced I think. From a coolness standpoint, I agree with Ray, the 2dr. fastback/sedan/coupe is tops. My comment came from the fact I would love to also have any year 411 2dr. sedan also, as long as I could have the '69 headlights and emblem position. I really need another Type 4 like I need a hole in the head (luckily, my job involves designing products to fix this very problem- but I digress...) Now that I am close to being back on my feet from almost 2 years of hard times, and starting to pull everything out of storage, I might be willing to trade a 412 or a collection of parts for a 411 2dr. fastback/sedan/coupe. Tracking down the headlights might be more difficult. I saw a NOS '69 set for sale awhile back on the samba for $375, a single one in Norway on type4.org one time, but that is about it. Making durable, non-cheesy replicas would be a tough task.

Yes, in that picture, the duct tape is on the intake boot. While unlike L-jet, this air leak will not affect the running of the injection....it lets in hot air and dirt.
That boot can be dispensed with except for one thing....the PCV connection down near the TB.
Long ago when I had the identical boot bad on my 411....I made a ring of a piece of large diameter stiff hose. Check at hose supply houses and browse for a while. It was I think....3" diameter waste water hose. Relativly stiff rubber. I cut the ring about 2" long. I clamped one end to the tB. Then...get a 1/2" barbed bulkhead fitting. That is basically a barbed air or water line fitting with a threaded bottom and a pair of nuts and flat washers with seasling washers. Its normal usage is to install a barbed waterline fitting into a drum or steel tank. You drill a hole in teh tanke, insert teh fitting from the inside...slip the seals and nuts over and tighten down. It makes a water tight nipple fitting.
In this case...I cut a smaller hole into the rubber hose rin. Then put in the barbed fitting pointing to the outside. I clamped it down. I shortened the nipple to 1". To this you connect your PCV hose. I then found either a sort of can or a piece of steel tube...can't remember which...and clamped it to the other end of the rubber hose/tube. To that I clamped a piece or forrugated heat riser hose and connected to the air cleaner.
So it goes...TB...3" slice of heavy rubber hose with at least 1/4" thick wall section....with barbed fitting installed....clamped to a tube...clamperd to the corrugated hose...clamped to the air cleaner. It gets the job done and is not too ugly. Ray

Thanks again, Ray! The master cylinder and intake boot have been ordered and I'll see what arrives and what works. I'll proceed from there, and use your creative solutions, if needed. Are you sure there's not some Kiwi blood in you? Those New Zealanders have learned to keep mechanical and electrical stuff running forever - one way or another. It's expensive to import anything, so they have a big incentive to improvise. We lived there for 10 years, so we know.
Wanna move to LA? Just think, lotsa sunshine, beaches, palm trees, girls (California girls!), In'N'Out Burgers, Hollywood....and cars (including 411s and 412s to keep running!) - millions and millions of cars!
Of course, you have the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders

I know this is off the original topic, but Albert, I have a mirror for you. I took it off the parts car my neighbor has in his pasture.
