Rear Wheel Bearings

Hi,

Does anyone know if the rear wheel bearings for a 412 are interchangeable with any other model?

They appear to be pretty hard to come by here in New Zealand and few companies who stock them in the states ship internationally. And when they do they want $110 (US) for shipping.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The only other vehicle I have ever heard of is some kind of ancient international brand vehicle....roughly equivalent to an old Ford Bronco.

I have looked at putting in a pair of double row ballbearings with a spacer...kind of more similar to what you have in the front axle of most watercooled vehicles. I have not measured the stub axle...but I bet you could find a bearing that is slighlty large in teh ID and bush it....then have the trailing arm milled to insert a par of cartridge double row ball bearings. The outer one held in by the stock bearing cover and the inner one by a pin or a snap ring. Ray

Thanks Ray. If you're not aware of any I'm sure there aren't.

I had heard somewhere that they may be the same as 1302/3 but considered this unlikely.

Oh yeah. I bit the bullet and got them sent over from the US. Got the postage down to sixty bucks.

Get new seals. Be very careful to drive in the new races very square. Pack the bearings carefully....and overpack the area around the spacer. I have found that later model bearings can sometimes have thinner tolerance making the spacer not able to properly preload teh bearings leading to early failure. Do the haynes manual method carefully...and if necessary....have the spacer milled a couple thousandths so you can use precision shims along with it to set the load between the bearings.

Only once have I seen a pair of new bearings that much thinner that I had to do this. Its worth it to collect spacers from wrecks so you can swap them in and out for better fit. Ray

Which company was this?

I only saw them once on ebay for 99 euro per side. Wish I got them then..

Ray, are new rear wheel bearing seals available then? If so, where?

I guess any bearings reatailer could order these, if they are not in stock. Yesterday I found better links for the bearings, but couldn't find them today. There were nice pictures of the bearings so it would have been easy to see if they were the correct items or not. I'll edit the links if I find the better sites.

The seals are not really hard to get. The original seals had teh dimesnions on them. I will look in my book when I get home. You need the thickness, ID and OD and any seal shop can get you a replacemnet. Ray

I hope they are the right ones. I haven't taken mine out as yet.

I have to replace them because the old ones are noisy. We have a 6 monthly warrant of fitness check here where they check your car for road worthyness.

I guess if these are wrong I'm screwed
