Living in So Cal I want to get an alarm system (as my previous one went out the window when the bug's electrical was redone).
Anyone have any suggestions on a good alarm system? I don't want anything fancy, just something that goes off when the door is opened, a window is broken, etc. Possibly w/ contacts for the hood and engine cover as well. Visual deterrent is important.
Thanks!

Re: Alarm Suggestions?
I have a Viper alarm in my 67 Beetle.I installed actuators in the doors that clamped on to the stock locking rods so I now have power door locks. There is a starter kill circuit, that doesn't allow power to the starter when the alarm is armed. So a thief can't hot wire the car and drive off. There is a sensor that emits chirps if anyoue gets too close to my car(it is adjustable from one to about five feet)There are glass break sensors that set the alarm off if a window is broken.there are sensors on the doors, hood, and deck lid that set the alarm off if any of these are opened. There is a bright red LED right beside the lock pulls on each door and on the center of the dash(where the center vent is)I have a scanning LED that is small and unobtrusive, but very bright and attention grabbing(it looks like the light on the front of the Knight Ryder Trans-Am car)when the alarm is active for a visual deterrant.I also put an extra alarm siren inside the car, behind my Scat Pro Car center console. As an extra line of defense,it is the super loud model and I don't think a thief wants to stay inside trying to get away while it's going off.I have also installed the jacking module that will go off if the car is jacked up past a certian angle like if it is rolled up a ramp onto a trailer or hooked up to a tow truck. There are also some extra functions that aren't used at this time so more security can be added later,or they can be used for other things like custom car stereo options such as motorized amp racks,or if you have custom opening trunk or decklid you can controll it with the alarm remote.I could hook up the remote start function, but it's not recomendid for manual transmissions,or carburated cars.Because you have to push the accelerator pedal to activate the chokes on carburators,Also you left it in gear and started it.It would take off down the street,or crash into your house or across the yard and into your swimming pool. And that would not be good.As an extra precaution, when ever I go shopping or to the mall.I always pop the rotor out of my distributor and keep it in my pocket.Nobody can start it without that,if they can get past the alarm. And there are the Viper stickers on the windows.I have actually had people ask me if a snake really comes out of the car if you touch it.I tell the,yes with a big grin.
