Border To Border Thing Run

Hi . For some of you newbies that do not know me, I`m Bob Ingman former frequent poster and one time co-moderator here.
I want to drive my Thing from BC Canada to Baja California Mexico this year and am looking for volunteers to join in the fun. The proposed plan is to use Hwy US 395 for most of the southernly route then head east to the Thing Shop on Labor Day weekend. From there its south again to San Filipe or Guymas.
Camping at small county parks is suggested for a less formal comradery.

Bob.....long time no post! Great to see you on here again.

395 runs right past my backyard, would be great to meet you in person when you come thru. I am just west of Kramer Junction in Rosamond here in California.

hey its good to be here too. I am seriously hoping to meet up with some of you guys this summer when I take hwy 395 south coming out of canada.
The plan is to gain in numbers as we go south and meet up at the Thing Shop in Chandler on Labor Day weekend. Then go on to Guymas of San Felepi for a day or two.

Dear Chub, Stub Tubb. I am azz deep in ice n' snow. I am seriously considering digging out Herr K and towing it to Sport Car and have Randy decode my fuel leak and install your Canadian oil coolers to prep for the Alcan to Baja run. Unless you want to come early and help me get him up to fuel and cool.. I got enuf Robert Johnson to keep you calm. Not to mention herb tea and tofu. Yer call, R-dub

R-Dub I will be up to my roll bar in preparation myself. Would be nice to stop by your place on the way down and I would do that in a perfect world. Still saving that one for the trip to Ok with the old lady. So far it looks as if I`ll be running El Solo Lobo most of the way but hoping to generate a little interest as i drive deeper into Ca. Its going to be a ride. Will you try to find a coordinator to schedule and handle logistics. As I say i`m partial to small county campgrounds and want to travel US 395 , eventually swinging east into Az. Labor Day weekend should find us at the Thing Shop in Chandler. Bob, Where do you think I should install those 914 oil coolers for max cooling?

R-Dub I would place them inside the vents of the engine compartment just as if they were being installed on an old bus. I would also think about installing a deep sump at the same time. With that increase in oil volume I think cooling issues will become a THING of the past. Take care. Bob

I've been studying maps of BC due to a thread @ The Samba about the Alcan Highway.
What is going to be your route from Prince of Wales Island to the US border?
Looks like it involves a ferry crossing to get to the Canadian mainland.
Could you please give the details of the highways you will be traveling in BC?
Looks like some pretty wild, wide expanse of country you have to pass through to get to the US.

Steve I tried to answer this earlier but there was site issues that prevented it.
Yes I will ferry from POW Island to Ketchikan and then another ferry to Prince Rupert BC. From there I will drive the yellowhead highway to Prince George. After PG I will go south on the Frasier River gorge highway of cut over SE to the highway 395 intersecting point of BC & Wa state. Three ninty five is my southernly highway through Wa, Or,Ca and half of Nv. I will cut through Nv to a point near Page Az for a look at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
I drove the Alcan many yrs ago when the last 1500 miles were still unpaved. This will be much easier.

Tim I think you are talking about the Inside Passage from Ket to Bellingham. I take that every year but want do have a real run this time a my final horrah with the Thing. take care. Bob

I got the snow melt issue. In the next three or four days the massive snow will melt and K-mann will be free to get some oil coolin" Have you marred Tim Dodge's sister yet. Thanks for the info and your comments.

That made me go back to the map and to the net to research a bit more.
Highway numbers make it easier to track routes, as some of us aren't always familiar with local or regional names for highways.
I didn't know the Yellowhead Highway, but finally gleaned it is Route 16, which heads ESE form Prince Rupert to Price George.
After that I'm still trying to figure out how you are getting to NE Washington State to hook up with US 395.

It looks like from Price George there is really only one way to go south and that is Route 97. Is that a correct guess on my part?
After that, I get lost as to how you are getting to US 395 near Laurier, WA.
Southern BC looks like a crazy quilt of highways jammed into a fairly small area, but of course dictated primarily by following drainage patterns. In my part of the world here in the Midwest, roads are basically laid out in a mile square grid (makes for easy to farm corn and soybean fields), so following the given terrain doesn't really apply much here.
There just appears to be multiple ways to go once you get into southern BC.

Here's my assumption of your likely route, and it's base on what appears to be the most direct way to get to US 395. "Direct route" seems to be a relative term in rough and rugged BC.
After you arrive at 100 Mile House while traveling south on 97, are you planning to continue on 97 through Cache Creek, Kamloops, Kelowna, and
Penticton?
If so, the only way west in BC before you would cross the border is to hop on Route 3 at Osoyoss. Route 3 then would take you to Laurier, WA where you could hook up with US 395.

Am I even close to your planned route, or do you have another route planned?

Either way, it looks like quite an adventure. ;-))
