I'm looking for one, if anyone knows where they might exist. It's the 411 one with the longer tailpipe. I've got a nice nickel-plated tailpipe already; now I just need the muffler to go with it.

At least some Porsche stuff will not fit as the flanges are upside down. A standard 72-75 Bus muffler will work fine, but finding the kind that takes the long tail pipe would be hard if that is what you want. Check the classifieds and eBay, they do show up from time to time.

Be sure what you are getting. There were a few brands and variants. I have used them all. Only one or two stand out.
Most of what is available out there is Dansk brand. Made in Denmark. The welding is terrible around teh ports. Not weak...just sloppy. Slightly restrictive.
The best of the bunch if you can find one is made by Ernst. These flow about 10-15% better than any of them. They are much thicker and heavier as well.
Old stock wagner...decent.
Leistritz very good...construction as good as Ernst...but basically stock.
The muffler where the pipe comes out of the center is called a "damper" style. It is more quiet...but more restrictive than the right or left exit model.
Compared to what we should have on the car...they are all restrictive and can cause elevated temepartures. Ray

Not any particular brand of stock muffler....but the overall style...of all of these brands was not great for the type 4.
Jake Raby had noted that partly due to restriction and partly due to the size and amount of radiating surfaces...that tehse mufflers cause a large portion of the original stock hot running chracteristics.
The Ernst brand mufflers are noticably larger, heavier, better constructed and better flowing. I do not know if they are any longer available. The leistritz is the next best.
The style of this muffler ....a very queit compact mufler in a very small difficult place ...was a good ides...just very difficult to accomplish.
I think about this all the time. I think....with what we know now...it could be redesigned. If it got even 25% better...That would be great. Ray

Where at the bughaus website are these mufflers? I went to the type 4 section and the mufflers they list there are said to be "unavailable", meaning you can't even back order them.

Hmmm.. ...tap that link above.....when the site opens...tap the small type in the center block of type on the right that says type 3 and 4......go to the small column of car pictures on the left....tap the oval balloon for the type 4 car.....the next page that comes up has pictures of parts categories....tap the picture of the muffler right center page.....two part #'s and descriptions come up.
Now...I have not tried to buy one. They may not have them.
Yup.....you are right....not available. It just reenforces that when my car is back on the road....I will probably have made my own exhaust. I am either building a stainless variant of a Bursch...or will make a much improved version of the stock muffler.
That being said...I habe an Ernst end exit model that I have sliced open...and a Dansk damper style I have sliced open from last year or so. These mufflers really are a compact marvel....but it is interesting the way they are layed out. There could be just a couple of changes made inside that ease the transition of the gasses from one side of the engine.
This style of muffler will never be a "header"...one that extracts gasses and "makes" HP....but if we can modify the design enough to just have say....half the back pressure and be balanced....I think it could do much better.
If I can keep it from banking heat in the engine....that would be enough.
