412s 4 sale

I found 2 412s. 1 is a wagon the other is a 4 door sedan. Very rusty in the floors - leak in a lot of places. The latches have rusted together so I couldn't open the engine cover on the wagon. Have been parked over 30 years. Lots of oe parts in the dry garage.

Should I get them? Fix them? part them out? or let the owner sell them to someone else??? What is the deal breaker on these cars? When do you walk away or sell the parts??

Thanks,
Chuck

When I read your story (pictures?) fixing would be a huge job... but that's your decission...

Part them out? I don't know. When you look at ebay, thesamba, etc. parts for a type4 have high prices... but... you see the same parts passing by again and again...
There isn't much questioning for these parts, simply because there aren't many cars left. So if your not in a hurry part them out would work. Only the motor will make more money then the price of the whole car...

Powder springs Georgia. uh....where exactly did you find them? About 1994/95...there was an outfit near the Bankhead highway area around Mableton...that had a lot of land in disrepair...and maybe 10 or so type 4 and a bunch of type 3 and bug. The area got cleared and I never knew where they all acttered to. Ray

Strange, I must have missed the CL post... Anyway, if they have been sitting outside for 30 years in GA and leaking, they are most likely complete junk, sad to say. Were they parked on some sort of paved surface or dirt? That said, some parts might be good still. Things that are in short supply: Good windshields, straight trim, non-rust pile sedan decklids. I really need a wagon driver's rear corner panel- always short the $$ when one comes up. Have tons of 2dr. sedan ones :? ! :( If they have low miles, maybe the ball joints might still be good? If the engines aren't wasted, they might be saleable.

Dr Crap! I haven't seen you around for a while....or is it just me.
You say you have lots of two door sedan rear quarters? I may have access to a couple wagon fenders in the next month (if they are still there). Maybe we can male a swap if I can get my hands on them? Ray

Been reading all the time, just don't have much to add. These last few years have been eventful Since Feb. 06: Had to move across the country to GA for my job, met a woman, got laid off as company went out of business, sold my old house w/shop, got engaged, parted out a 412, towed one out to GA and started working on it again, put the rest in storage, was out of work for 6 months, bought and parted out a 412 I found here, fell on hard financial times from extended unemployment, then started a new job, got married, bought a fixer-upper property w/2 houses but no garage, had our main house partially renovated, went way over budget, adopted a dog that had 8 puppies- you know, the usual... I have 3 412's in storage in MO and one here under a cover in the driveway in GA. Currently, I am fixing up the house we are living in and desperately need to fix up the other house to rent (have eager trustworthy renter lined up). After that, the plan is to build a suitable garage to work on a couple of cars at a time and maybe a gigantic carport for overflow Type 4 storage/parking and our daily drivers ('97 GTI and Jetta, '00 Dakota). I've told the wife several times that I was contemplating giving up the 412 warlord status and getting rid of them (a painful proposition for me), just seemed like getting back to them was going to be impossible, but she has insisted I keep them. :D

I have a couple of relatively straight, relatively rust free 2dr. quarters here and some in storage in MO. The ones here are not mint but would definitely be workable to replace a crunched or rusted through piece, or have as potential spares for unfortunate mishaps. I would love to trade! Unfortunately, my spare windshields have gotten broken from moving around etc... they were cloudy but they were the best I had...always willing to trade something for a good, uncracked windshield.

Yeah...its been a bit like that for me since last June. Just starting to get everything normalized. Lost my major contract/job last June, been contracting but under employed through December....underfunded too...then snagged a job in Virginia and had three weeks to move. I just got everything but my 412 out of storage last week. Ray
