I think I have a 411 engine on my buggy...

I've heard there are some experts here that may be able to help me. I have a type 1 buggy, 69 chassis. I'm assuming it also has a Type 1 transaxle. Manual clutch, not hydraulic. I just acquired it and the original owner told me it had a late 70's Vanagon engine, 2.0. After some research I found that VW didn't make the Vanagon until the 80's. Also based on the Engine # I have come to the conclusion that the engine is either off of a 1970 411 (1.7) or a Porsche 914 of the same year. For anyone with an accurate list the engine # is W0054260. It is stamped on the top of the engine.

Anyway, on with the story. After about 3 days of joyous ownership the throw-out bearing seized and tore the fingers off of the clutch case. Thus began my search for a replacement clutch. I removed the engine and clutch to find a 210mm clutch plate and case paired with a Type 1 throw-out.

What kind of Frankenbuggy did I get myself involved with? I'm guessing the clutch has to fit the Type 1 transaxle splines but be able to bolt to a 210mm flywheel. I've heard of the nightmare of trying to find a replacement 411 clutch. I'm hoping I don't need one.

I'll post some pics this weekend as soon as I figure out how. Any advice?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

That engine is indeed a 1.7 Type 4:

As for the clutch, the 210mm clutch should be available at places like the Type4store ( http://www.type4store.com/ )and aircooled.net ( http://www.aircooled.net/ ).

A quick search at the Type4store turned up the pressure plate and disc you'd need: http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/stor ... hp?cat=292

I'm a bit envious that you have a Type 4 powered buggy. The rugged Type 4 is a perfect complement to a buggy. :)

Tuna, Thanks for the quick reply. When the buggy ran...It ran well! Pulled hard with very little weight to move. Unfortunately that was only for 3 days... Apparently it was converted to a single carb somewhere along the way. That may have to be replaced soon.

I'm going to order the clutch plate and basket you recommended. I'm guessing after looking at pics on germansupply.com that I have a flywheel that has been machined to accept the type 1 pilot bearing/gland nut. It worked before. I'm assuming someone before me did that homework.

I have seen mentioned a couple of times a pad that I need to install to couple the type 1 throw-out to the type 4 clutch. Any idea where I can find one of those? I want this thing to run for more than a few days when I put it back together.

Thanks again for your help!

Before you waste your time researching for me...

I looked a little deeper into aircooledtechnology.com and found the Type 1 to Type 4 adapter. Great site. Should have all the parts I need.

What did we ever do before forums? Went to the library I guess...

Thanks again for your help.
