... went to put it back on and found that the pivot bolt for the alternator is GONE! don't know if it broke or backed out. anyone know what size/pitch it is and if it can be put in with the engine in the car? haven't been under there yet to see what i need to do, but i'm headed there saturday.

I would believe so, this thread should tell what is possible or not for an alternator in a Variant:

If you can change the alternator with the engine in the car you can certainly replace the pivot bolt.

after what feels like forever, the alternator mount is fixed! now, i just need to replace the very stretched belt and bleed the brakes! drove it 3 miles and had to mash the pedal to the floor for any braking at all. but, i drove it! put some blue stock wheels with trim rings on it and i think i like it.

oh,, one more thing,, the most hard is to slide the belt bitween the rubber boots and the fan case,, but just loose the clip bolt on the fan boots ,,(on the fan side ) ( d,t remoove the clip just loose the bolt ) and push the fan boots for to slide the belt over the fan ,( make sure wend you put back the fan rubber boot is in her good place beefore to tight the bolt on the clip ) ,sometime ,, i remoove the fan cover onder the car ,, only 3 bolt for to remoove that,,( 3 flat head screws in the motor section,,) this information is for the wagon,, i have make this job 3-4 times,, and that take appx. 2 hrs,, and appx. 6 hrs for to change the alternator witch the motor in the place,, and i d,t remoove the heather box on the right side like haynes said in her mec. book,,i have 20-25 pict. for this job,, albert

Whew! Glad you solved the problem.
That rear nut on the alt pivot is a pain to get at, I usually end up using one of those ratchet-end box-end wrenches to loosen it enough to get it out of there.

it's all together, insured and was driven today! tomorrow it does the 48 mile round trip for work
oh... 12,000 miles on the car since the springs were cut to level it out. still ridin' smooth, straight and comfortable.

running well less the MPG and i have this odd mystery miss that happens on occasion. i had it before the car got parked, but the 1st 2 tanks of gas after bringing it back to life there was no miss. now, tank 3 has it back.
