2 DIN Radio

I'm interested in fitting a 2DIN stereo to my '73 Coupe. I scaled and printed out a picture of the face of the one I'm looking at, and it looks fine over the original radio hole, but I will need to take out the fresh air controls for clearance. Personally, I never use my freshair vents anyway (I just like having my windows anyway), so taking them out isn't an issue for me. Has anyone put in such a stereo, or am I in uncharted waters here?

I'm planning on installing a single DIN in my 74. I like the idea of the single DIN because it takes less work to install in the Ghia and when parked...looks like and ordinary AM/FM/CD player. But my stepson put a double DIN in his Honda Prelude and he had to get a trim kit to fit the opening. I don't know what trims are available for Ghias. Hope this helps some.

I'm guessing no trim kits will be available since I'm going to have to gut a good part of the dash to make it fit. I thought before about what you said, how when parked a single DIN unit is less obvious what it is, but I'm just not a fan of the fold out screens. They always look like a make-shift solution, and look very aftermarket. Since I'm going to redo the dash face at teh same time and remove the fresh air vents I'm hoping that it turns out looking very clean, and quasi-stock. Granted, it will be a 6.5" touch screen all-in-one in a '73 VW, so nobody will really be fool into thinking it's factory.

I like the idea of a 2 DIN in a Ghia but didn't think it would fit. I've just installed one in my Silverado and may have to rethink the 2 DIN in the Ghia. Perhaps a 2DIN in a console UNDER the dash just below the gauges. Things that make you go Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Have you checked the backside? I tried to install a headunit and equalizer in the dash of a bug back in the 80s before DIN and there was a cross brace that prohibited? I would look at mine, but I am too lazy to leave the computer right now.

@vwdevotee did you find the right one? Could you recommend me one?

Sorry for being off-topic. I'm looking for a good stereo and can't make my mind up which one is the best.

There are so many aftermarket stereos that it's hard to find a good one. Many of them have one digit difference in their name. Anyways I've been reading reviews on the nets and they are all hype. Most of them downplay the negatives and hype features like 7" as if it would be that important. I've found a different blog and I've set my heart on the alpine halo. The thing I liked about this blog is that it says it how it is. No sugar coating no BS. This halo9 review is a bit critical. It has highlighted some flaws that put me on the fence. What do you say?

Any tips?
