my parts list shows
311 611 817 does that mean i can use a type 3 part? cant find anything online with that #...
cip1.com lists a grommet with the part #
113 611 817 A as a replacement for late model beetles, ghias, and T3s that looks about right, but its OD of 16.75mm is smaller than the leaky one i've got.
https://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.as ... A&CartID=1
does anyone know if these will work? if they wont, where can i find the right one?

The Porsche 914 & 911 take the same size grommet as a Bug/Bus/T3...
(As well as ~ every other European car I have ever worked on...)
Spend $10 and see if they fit.
(That seems a bit steep, actually)
The link you provided lists the critical dimensions...

That should be it. It takes the same part as type 3 cylinders. Thanks Bill! Ray

grommets from busdepot.com finally showed up today... at first i thought i got the wrong part, but all the critical dimensions were right, and the "new" shape actually prevents it from being inserted too far and blocking the ports:
installed:
at the last minute i remembered to clean off the mold release...it started to booger-up once i dabbed some brake fluid on it to help slip it in:
so far no leaking...
