should i use a gas additive in this old engine?
Theoretically your valve job will last longer with something to inhibit the transfer of metal between the valve seat and face like the "lead" in yesterday's gas did...but VWs don't suffer from this nearly as badly as old Detroit motors that seated the valve directly against their cast-iron heads, so valve-job life is acceptible with unleaded fuel. Not cost-effective IMO.
