Anyone have any Fresh air tubes?

Post by vwbill »

Hello, I trashed my right side black plastic fresh air tube that goes from the alternator tin to the fan schroud! I would buy a set too! Thx, Bill,jr. I have a 74 VW 412 2dr 1.7djet

I've replaced all of my car fresh air tubes with aluminium ones as I couldn't find correct size plastic tubes. Aluminium tubes are available at any car part store atleast here in Finland. I just painted them black so they would have the original look.

I'll have to check! Thanks for the idea! The tube I'm looking for has 2.5" round end but the other end is oval and I don't know if I can find that type of end? It goes on that tin piece that goes from the right heat exchanger up through the engine tin and is next to the alternator... Thx, Bill,jr.

Atleast a 411 wagon has a separate plastic "adapter" that fits on to the tube that's coming from the heat exchanger. This adapter has an oval opening for the heat exchanger pipe and a round opening for the fresh air tube in the engine compartment. But if you don't have that plasitc adapter part you can also easily mold the aluminium tubing by hand as it has wery thin wall thicknes.
The adapter i'm talking about is the part number 23 in this picture:

There were several different style of these boots/adapters. The exact one used depended on body style. BTW they don't connect to either alternator tin or the fan shroud.

No, this is the part of the heater system that connects the warm air duct(tin piece that is attached on top of the heat exchanger) from the heat riser on the right exhaust manifold that goes through the tin next to the alternator and connect to the heater blower fan on the plastic air intake fan shround that connects to the motor cast fan schroud. Thx. Bill,jr.

Here is a link to two pics. The first pic shows number 19 warm air duct on the right side heat exchanger that sits vertical on the manifold and come through the engine tin next to the alternator and the black plastic tube attaches to that oval end and goes to the heater blower fan mounted to the schroud that the engine lid seals to. See pic two and the engine bay heating system. You can't see the right side but it is like the left side but the one end is oval on one side and round on the other.

This picture shows the differences in fresh air tubing between sedan (upper) and wagon (lower):

It seems that sedans dindn't have any plastic adapters between the fresh air tubes and the pipes coming from the heat exchangers. The fresh air tube is just clamped to the pipe.

And here you can see the connecting tubes (parts 53 and 54) from heat exchangers, through cooling tin, to the fresh air tubes:

The tube I'm lookin for is the one labled 28 and goes to the part 54 in the next pic. 54 comes through the right engine tin and the oval end of the black plastic tube attaches there and goes to the fan on the right side... Great images! Thx! I couldn't upload my images because my pics were too big file wise... Thx Bill,jr.

Type 4 engined Type 2s have a similar arrangement, I found these hoses at Just Kampers:

I don't know what length they are, but they appear to be oval at one end.

Wow, I'll have to look again and see if I don't have some kinda adapter there??? Great Idea Albert!! I was hoping maybe the Busdepot one might slide inside the original and I could keep some of the original look! Thx, Bill,jr.
