Lifter identification

Post by Gunthner »

I have a 2.0 type IV engine and don't know if it has solid or hydraulic lifters. Without breaking down the engine how does one determine what type of lifters the heads have?

Pull a valve cover off, look at the push rods, if they are fat aluminum then the chances a really good that it has solid lifters. If they are skinny dull steel then the chances are good the engine has hydrualics.

but the only way to be sure is to remove teh valve cover, unbolt one of the rocker assemblies, pull it out of the way, pull a push rod , and pull the pushrod tube, now pull out the lifter w/ a magnet and look at it. if it has a c-clip inside teh bore it is hydro.
give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

Things are rarely just crazy enough to work, but they're frequently just crazy enough to fail hilariously.

They feel very different when you go to adjust them. Hard to mistake one for the other if you have ever felt both.

From

And don't worry about mix and match, the pushrods are quite a different length, if you have the pushrod, you will have the compatible lifter
