Need Amp?
If I buy something that labled as a receiver, do I also need to find an amp?

Re: Need Amp?
Welcome to the STF harryset. Your ? is kinda vague. But I will try to answer it. An amp is added to increase the the wattage going to your speakers, most receivers will work without amplification. Do you have a link or better yet a part # of the receiver that you are looking at?harryset wrote:If I buy something that labled as a receiver, do I also need to find an amp?
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

Re: Need Amp?
I was just doing a search at Best Buy website to see what units they had that would fit the dash of a '72 bug. It's been years since I've had to shop for something like this, and of course things have changed. The descriptions don't actually tell me what outputs any of them have, other than the pre-amp outputs. I was looking at a couple of the JVC's, don't have a model number handy. All I want to do is hook up to a couple of 6x9's in the rear package area.

Re: Need Amp?
Now-a-days a reciever is called a headunit. Most headunits have a built in amp that will drive your 6x9's with no problem. If the headunit in question refers to the CD section as a player only then it will require amplifiers as there will be no internal amplifier.I have an Alpine CDA 7995.They call it a "tuner/CD player".In place of the internal amplifier Alpine has put in a high quality CD drive,a crossover section,a time correction section,s subwoofer crossover section, their Bass Engine processor and a few other goodies. This headunit, has front, rear, and subwoofer RCA outputs only.Meaning that without amplifiers, this headunit will not make a sound.Hope this helps.

Re: Need Amp?
Unless you're mostly a talk-radio listener, I'd suggest an amp, even a cheap little 200W one, with a 'built-in' crossover. The amp/crossover can really clean-up the sound the speaker gets, helping with the distortion with the music turned up.
I've got the same model JVC HU in my Dad's daily driver Beetle, and in my DD BayWindow - both have performed well...I added a little Jensen amp to mine and it helped considerably.

Re: Need Amp?
Adding an amp and subwoofer will really enhance your listening experience. You don't have to go as wild as some of us,but adding a subwoofer will fill out your bottom end. There is so much music you aren't hearing without one. Also with a subwoofer playing the low end the rest of your speakers will sound better too, because they will not have to play so hard trying to reproduce frequiencies they weren't designed to play. You would be amazed at how much better your music will sound with as little as a couple of 8" subs and about 150 watts. You don't have to crank it like those youngesters in their Boom cars to appreciate good sound.I've got 4 Alpine 10" Type R's and 2000 watts, but unless I twist the knob you would never know it.
If your levels are set properly you won't get that boomy sound the younger people like, you will get a full, rich, enjoyable, quality sound that can rival the best quality home speakers.

Re: Need Amp?
I'm even more out of the loop than Harryset. I've got a nice Sony Xplode headset in my Beetle with 2 6"X9" speakers in the rear and two 6" round in front. Sounds okay, but I'd like to get more umph out of it. I've been wanting to add a subwoofer and understand that you need an amp of some sort, but what? Are there sites that explain all the various components and how to spec them.
I was thinking of placing a single 10" or 12" woofer in the space behind the rear seat with a package shelf above on to which I would mount the 6"X9". I want to change out the 6" rounds to 4" rounds up front and re-orient them (the current speakers are in a front package shelf similar to the bamboo ones facing the floor)
Am I smoking funny stuff or does my idea have merit? Do I need two amps, one for the sub and one for the other speakers? Is my thought on the sub placement crazy? Is there an amp that would handle the sub and speakers with a crossover (is that an old term?).
Thanks,
Wayne

Re: Need Amp?
Are there no audiophiles in this group? I'm just looking to bump up the bass in my stereo and have no clue how. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I go to the stereo stores and they all sound good, but they all suggest different solutions. My current stereo sounds good, but could use a little more bass and I don't want to "try" something and realize that I spent $400.00 and am still where I started.
I'm cheap, so I'm looking to add bass for little dinero.
Thanks,
Wayne

Re: Need Amp?
I've got two 10" subs behind the back seat, and an Amp on top of the box along with two 6x9"s. You should only need one amp (my speakers are all straight to the head unit, not the amp). One sub would probably be plenty in a Beetle, but I got both of mine for $20 from a friends older brother. It sounds good, it can go loud if I want it to, no problem, but it sounds good quiet too.Fahrfrumnuvw wrote:Are there no audiophiles in this group?
