Pivot bolt washer placement

Pivot bolt washer placement

Post by winifredevw »

How do you have the washers/spacers on the inner pivot of the trailing arm? When I put my 2x3's on, I had both washers on the outboard side, ricko suggested to put them on the inboard side, and it did free up some space. I also had to push my trailing arms as far forward as the slots in the spring plates would allow.

edit- I should note that I have 091 nose-shift, semi-homemade tranny mounts and questionable quality trailing arms.

edit by Leatherneck: split thread to keep each on topic, haha like that could friggen happen.

Is this a survey question or is it directed towards someone in particular?

Both of mine are on the outside, but I built the trailing arms to fit my sandrail.

I have two on the outside. I tried it with one on each side, but it really messed up the rear tow. I couldn't get it back into spec until I put both washers on the outside. I don't think I've seen it any other way from someone that knew what they were doing.

Nope it is a stock VW torsion setup. Is the trailing arm suppose to be a sloppy fit or close tolerance?

Same question?

I could fit 4 washers in if I want to. I can see how it really moves things around out at the wheel location depending on where you place the piviot.

I'm going to have a few more questions on this stuff  I have never set up the rear IRS on a stock car let alone on a 3x3 set up. I am sure there is some basic set up stuff that will still relate?

Will I find this kind of stuff in my Idiot book?...If I can find my Idiot book?

Okay, I keep reading that the washers should be either on the outside, or split inside/outside. On my 3x3 Latest Rage look-alikes I had to put both washers on the inside to get the rear toe in even remotely close to being set with the factory spring plate slots. This is with a factory torsion housing, factory pivots, and factory spring plates. FWIW, I was told to put them wherever it took to get the alignment into spec! I'm not saying mine is "correct", only that sometimes bolt on parts don't exactly bolt on.

So I get that that this is probably some built in adjustability?

I do not have a stock arm with me. I may need to go get one to bolt it in there....been 4 years since I took it out

But Leathers question, is what I was refering to. Is it supposed to a tight fit or have slop? I have 3 in there now and can fit a 4th.

Are these washers anything special? Am I goint to have a hard time comming up with some more?

You need to have the trailing arm snug, you don't want the pivot to be able to slop around. Then make sure your toe in or out is where you need it. Place the washers where they will make for best performance and handling. As much as we tweak these things I don't think anybody can say all should be this or that way.
