HEEEEELLLLPP!!! Ideas on carb to F/I conversion PLEASE
Hi All, So here is my delima (as it were). I have two 1974 VW 412s - a wagon and a 4 door. The wagon has a restored/rebuilt 1800 engine with a great running fuel injection system. The four door has been "upgraded" (as it were) to a 96mm pistons (which is a 2.1 liter I think) and a 2 liter crank with dual carbs that work like crap. OK, the wagon is dead (for other reasons other than the engine) so I am going to use it as a donor car to finish the restoration of the 4-door. I can't decide however which engine set-up to use. I was thinking a hybrid of the two - the larger engine with F/I. How would I get that to work? I know I would need a new wiring harness for the F/I since the wagon on sedan are markedly different (and both are L-Jet- I'm discovering the harnesses for the four door is VERY hard to find, even an old one to use as a template - sigh). Would you just use the 1800cc engine and F/I? A BIG part of me wants it to look original, thus is the reason for considering going back to the F/I. I could just keep fiddling around with the carbs for extra power, but that's not what I'm interested in. If I used the larger engine with F/I (the hybrid idea), should I use a bus set-up from a 76-79 since they were/are 2.0 liters? HEEEEELPPPP!!!!!

Not really sure what you are doing, but the fuel injection can be easily swapped from engine to engine as there are few differences from year to year or between FI and Carburated long blocks. As far as I know the FI off of an 1800 should be able to handle the fueling needs of 2100 engine.

Thanks for the info. I think what I am going to do is use the larger engine, the one with the 96mm p/c with fuel injection.
Now it seems to me that somewhere in my brain is telling me that the intake manifold for a 2 liter bus is larger in diameter than the intake on our beloved type 4s. Is this true? If it is true, would it be of benefit to use a bus set-up, or just use the components I already have for the type IV L-Jet?
Finally, would ANYONE out there happen to have the fuel injection wiring harness for a 1974 type IV 4 door? It is different than the wagon. It doesn't need to be any good, I am just going to use it as a template to have a new one constructed. I also need the air cleaner and stand for the same vehicle. Other than that, I think I'm good.
Thanks for reading.

I think that VW used three different diameter intake runners over the years. They don't necessarily correspond to the size of the engine. Others will know more.
