1974 Thing. Bought today. Died today

So I'm new to this. Worst story ever. I bought a 1974 thing today. I knew what I was getting myself into. Actually traded an SUV for it. Wanted one forever. It had some rust but the owner took good care of it. This week it got a new speedo and a tune up. He's never had major engine issues.
So today driving home from Houston 4 hours (I should have towed it) it was doing great on the FWY for the first 75 miles then I felt it jerking a little bit. Immediately pulled into a gas station. It was about 100 degrees. Filled it up and noticed a lot of oil leaking. Checked and added a quart. Started driving again. About 20 miles further it just died on the fwy. A lot of oil inside the engine compartment and even some on the bumper and definetly leaking underneath. CHecked the dip stick and empty.
Hiked to a gas station. Bought oil. Came back to put it in but now the engine won't even turn over. When I turn the key all I hear is "click" and nothing. LIghts work signals work. Not a battery issue.
When we went to tow it we noticed that it was not rolling well even in neutral. Had a really hard time getting it on the trailer.
So my question. With that info can anyone tell me what is wrong. Did the engine blow up. Did it "sieze" and the transmission went too?
Fortunately I am home but the thing is on my street and not in my garage. Since it's not rolling I'm having a hard time putting it away.
