We had round 6 of the local historic racing this past weekend at Zwartkops (South Africa). With my bug out for the season due to engine failure, only my dad's bug was running.
It's my dad's fourth event driving this car.
Qualified in 8th
First race we had a DNF due to rocker shaft failure in lap five. Excessive RPM or fatigue could be the reason.
Quickly gathered spares and got the car running again for the 2nd race.
Start position was #27... finish 2nd!!!! Here's the in car video

Gentlemen!
Let's hear it for the red VW in Jo'Burg! Absolutely outstanding!
Only at speed, and in competition, does automotive truth and beauty fully reveal itself. All you chrome-plated, cafe-racer, blister-pack go-fast parts and belly-pan dragging, narrow-axle dudes look into yourselves, watch this video and understand why, there but for stylin', go I.

See you all at Sebring, 24 September...

4agedub,
Congratulations to you and your dad! Obviously, you must have really busted your rears to get running again and to have enough left to drive like THAT, WOW. Well done.

Thanks
My dad's bug is a swing axle chassis with link pin front end. Cut/turn and welded front end, hd front sway bar. We bent the front suspension arms to gain enough camber. Long torsion bars at the rear with a HD Z bar. The engine is a t1 1776cc with scat c55 cam, home modified heads and dual 44idf carbs. Shift point 7000rpm. 1300 Gearbox (4.375 final drive) with 1.04 4th and 1,3 3rd (if I remember correctly). VW Rabbit front and rear calipers with vented rotors on front and solid rotors on the back.

Wow, Impressive run! The motor sounds great. What type of car came in 1st? By the way he was passing cars at will, it didn't look like anyone else on the track had anything for him. Very well done!

The car that won was a old pre77 toyota corolla.

Gentlemen,
Are you noting this? 1776cc. Homemade head work. Bending trailing arms blacksmith style to get camber.
And with a swing axle, the worst of all rear suspensions, out there beating those zippy little European sedans with their much more stable live and independent rear axles.
According to the convential wisdom stateside, you're doing everything unfashionably wrong. Half our VW's here couldn't make it to the shopping mall without at least 2.3 liters, 48IDA Webers, Donner und Blitzen ignition, and one inch of ground clearance.
You should explain the type of competition you have so our gentle readers won't think you're running against slowpokes.

Hi
Very impressive. Why was he so far back in the pack? Was that because of not qualifying with the DNF in the 1st race? Another 100 metres or so of racing and he would have won.

I'm interested as to what was the compression ratio of the 1776 motor? It sounds pretty stout, and is obviously making some great power.
With the enduro racing I've been doing, it would cost us Far too much money $$ running Higher octane fuel for hours on end. Having to run pump gas, and trying to keep the motor cool, forces us to limit the CR (and power!) in an effort to make these motors last an entire race w/o issues.
During the 24-hour race, we ran 130+ gallons of fuel total. Not Cheap. Race fuel would have cost us more than double.
When I used to run my car at the circle track, our races were only around 8- 20 laps around a 1/4-mile oval. The fuel bill for race gas wasn't that bad. I used to run as high as 11.5 CR. I've found at the enduro's (so far) that 8-8.5 CR seems to hold up, and not get too hot.

My 1303 (Super) has almost 2000cc T1 motor, coilovers front, Porsche brakes..and all those fancy racing modifications...etc, but it doesn't look as fast as yours!
He started so far back due to a DNF in the first race.
The motor does have a lot of torque for it's size. The gear ratio's and weight of the car also help a lot. The compression is 12:1 static with c55 scat camshaft and 1:25 rockers. The fuel is 95 octane fuel with 26' max advance, no det. We have looked at running avgas or sunoko, but it just does not make money sense... also the power gained by advancing the timing is not worth it.
As for temperatures, we run dry sump with +- 10lt oil in the system. There is one oil cooler mounted in the front wheel well and one cooler beneath the rear window. In summer time the oil temp will reach max 95'c.
All our races are sprint races... + - 10 laps. We do not run in the endurance races.

Wow, it was cool watching your dad reel those cars in one after another. Clearly, he was the fastest car on the track and only needed an extra lap to have won it. Good stuff!
