Goodbye dizzy, hello direct coil.

Post by Devastator »

I'm finally giving up on running my coil off of my MS2 with a Pertronix pickup in the dizzy, and going to direct ignition control.
Now that you have all picked yourself up off of the floor, I have a few questions for ya. :)
I am planning on purchasing the following items from DIYAutotune:

Bosch BIP373 Coil Driver Mod Kit (2x so I have a spare or so I can upgrade the one in MS2)
IGN-4 Four-Tower Coil Pack
Crimp Connector for IGN-4
Hall effect threaded body crankshaft position sensor

Is there anything I'm missing here?
I'll be making my own 36N1 wheel, which brings me to my next question.
What is the "normal" orientation of the 36N1 wheel to the TDC line on an ACVW engine. I know that MS2 can use the trigger offset to compensate for almost any mounting position, but it would be great to have a place to start from. I'll be mounting the pick up somewhere near the alt. stand for fan belt clearance.

Lastly, (I hope), do I need to remove the distributor drive gear after I remove the dizzy, or can I just disengage it and leave it in the case, so that the thrust washers don't fall out?

Thanks in advance.

The hall sensor is supposed to be 90 degrees before TDC, but you can put it anywhere and then manipulate the numbers. I think it's on msextra or maybe the megamanual but there is a spread sheet that you just punch the numbers into and then it will give you what you need to enter when you setup MS. It took me a while to pull my head out of my ass and figure out that spread sheet.

If you want to run a plug instead of having the dizzy filling that hole you will need to pull the distributor drive gear, or you could machine down the distributor shaft and use that, someone else did that and it turned out sweet.

They (probably) basically chopped off the distributor just above the upper thrust bearing (including the shaft etc) and capped it.
You still could later mount a hall on it if you ever decided to go with COPs/CNP.
(Wouldn't have to be very complicated)

If the drives in, the distributor (or something) and spring are required to keep it in the correct place or it will fill your motor with brass as the crank drive gear gets eaten.

Like I mentioned previously, having a distributor DOES make valve adjustments far easier, just so you can easily see where you are.
Otherwise you need to be 3 places at once to watch rocker arm movement.
Hardly impossible, but easier with a convenient pointer.

I was having crazy thoughts last night of modifying my dizzy to have a clear lens on top and some cool blinky lights that would flash with engine RPM. Maybe even a POV light that read "Devastator" when it was running. I think I need to start getting more sleep at night.

I know this guy that kept the distributor with crank fire, myself I can tell the difference between the two TDC.

Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Now I'm confused...again. I am reading about the steps necessary to directly fire the coils from my MS2. I can only find information to run coils from MS2Extra. Can I fire 2 coils from my MS2, using B&G code, without an EDIS4 module?

Why in the world would you keep B&G code? Extra is light years ahead of that stuff...

I suppose I could. I was just trying to keep this as simple as possible.
Does that mean that I can't use B&G code without an EDIS module, sequencer board, or DIY Multispark module?
I read something about using an OR gate with MS2 to fire dual motorcycle coils with a Microsquirt, but I didn't understand it, (I'm just coming off of a 68 hour work week).

Once you spend 5 minutes with the MS2-extra and have to go back, you will think Tunerstudio is broken.

The diags alone are worth switching for.
Don't look back.

The latest alpha code has some huge improvements to idle quality and MAP filters, and works fine in my daily commuter.
It's so far past the B&G code it's not even funny, and if you don't want to use a feature, simply leave it off

There are even user levels in TS, it disables whole blocks of the menus.
OTOH to use sequential fuel, it requires "advanced", which allows access to everything.
Not sure what level waste spark requires.

Other than wiring for an additional direct coil control, what changes do I need to make to my MS2 in order to run MS2Extra?
