1970 Karmann Ghia -- how much is it worth??

Post by lgs_karmann »

I am thinking of selling my 1970 Karmann Ghia. It is a convertible and the rear window is glass. The brake was recently replaced, as was the engine. Because of this, the engine does not have many miles on it. The car is in good condition, the exterior more so than the interior. The interior would need a little work, but it certainly is not bad. I will attach two pictures and if anyone has an idea of how much it'd be worth, please let me know!!

Depends on location and how much work you are willing to do to sell it. A rust free VW is worth more in the Rust Belt than it would be in other areas.

kind of hard to get a clear picture of condition from just the two photos - how are the pans? what about rockers and heater channels? do you know if it has ever been wrecked/body repaired? how about re-painted? where are you located and how long has the car been there?

Due to my lack of automobile knowledge, I can't answer all of those questions off the top of my head. I live in Wisconsin. The car has been here for a couple years, but stored over the winters. I'm just looking for a price range right now -- in your experience, what is a suitable range for this type of car?

Hi Lgs_karmann,

Average Ghia across the country is about $5k.

Being a convertible is an asset to some, a negative to others as top replacement and leaks cost money to fix.

What matters in the bodywork is rust. Ghias can rust badly. This is 2012, and most Ghias for sale these days have body filler and paint over the rust.

This looks like the Ghia I purchased from your college bound daughter in Middleton. If it is, can you tell me more about the engine replacement? I know it is a GEX. What other changes have you made? The wiring is a little off base. a 009 dist doesn't go with the Carb you used ... flat spot.... I love the body and can overlook some of the problems. You daughter was a good salewomen and a neat kid. Thanks.

[ Hi, I now have this car but find I know nothing of its history. Could you brief me about the engine and wiring? Thanks
