Newbie question

I met an older guy last week while trying to buy a car from him. We kind of hit it off and he has a few cars and is looking to move some of them because of health reasons. One of them is a 1970 Karmann Ghia. It's a complete car but it's not mint. I know pictures will help and I can get them but I'm curious about the market value. I think he is looking in the $3k range. If you have advice or may be interested let me know.

Biggest concern is rust. What part of the country has the car spent its life in? "cosmetic" body/paint/interior work is much more satisfying than dealing with a cancer patient. `70 wasn't a great year for engines, but not the worst, either, so if the engine does need work there's at least a chance of it being worth the investment. Almost all of the major mechanicals are identical to those of a `70 Beetle, so there's not too much problem (yet) finding whatever you need there. Real `Ghia single-pin front calipers are obsolescent but can be replaced (in pairs) with common/inexpensive `66-`71 Type III reproductions, everything else is 99% Beetle.
Sight-unseen it's pointless to discuss value but rust-free/basically-straight `Ghias get more rare every day (either by normal attrition or due to ill-advised "customization").

Well I think it has mud in it and the paint does look tired. He thinks he has rust in the fuel line. I will get the pics.
