Waterboxer in my 1969 Bug

Post by pocketrocket »

I've been working on this project off and on for the last 3 years at least. Thought I would post a few pictures of how things are going. 3 pictures 3rd with engine in the bug, 2nd with the rear clip on the back & 1st with the way I cut & mounted the rear clip. I will add more pictures on how I did the coolant tubes and hoses to the front of the bug and the front radiator & the amount of cutting in the rear luggage area. Rocky

i have a question for you Rocky, how did you manage to fit the full merge system on your engine. mine hits the oilfilter big time and only way i can see how to fix this is to remove the watercooled oilcooler , this is absolutely not in my budget right now so all advice is extremely appreciated.

regards

The polo filter is much shorter than the t25 standard unit.
That said, if you are running the T1 racing merged system (ie non heat exchanger style) it will still be a problem with the cooler plate fitted.
I had to modify mine even without the cooler.
A merged header for use with heat exchangers should work with the polo filter and oil cooler but it will still be a squeeze.

a im running a t1 racing merged system, and i got a mocal filter relocation adapter kit for free from a good friend of mine and oilcooler sandwitchplate with thermostat , just need to get myself a decent cooler now and some hoses for connecting eveything

propably going to be a volvo cooler as they are the most commonly available here in sweden.

is drysump needed on these motors then? would help a bit as you couldnt need the cooler take off on the filter. expensive way around it mind!

how much cutting is needed to fit a wasser in a beetle? i like your removable valance!

drysump is not needed. a oilfilter relocator is needed if you use a full merge racing header from a typ1 as far as i know. this is the case for me.

im going to our local hydraulics company for some pressed hoses. cant be bothered with leaky hoseclamps in such a important place.

@ andy198712 their really isnt any cutting needed to put just the motor into the type1 body. altho their will be some sort of cutting needed biased upon how one chooses how to go about the radiator install. super beetles imo (like mine) are the easiest to convert to a WBX cause if the front apron having the cooling vents. like mine, ive only lost like 2sq ft if even that in my trunk. a wbx is a very fun and very easy do-able swap.

A few more pictures of up dates of the Waterboxer 2.1 into a bug. Latest picture of the engine.
DSC08572 (Small).JPG
Next the luggage area I cut to get to the cooling hoses ect. And the cover I made open and closed.

DSC08575 (Small).JPG
The front of the bug with a pic. of the radiator mounted with grills in the front nose, I will also have grills in the hood with the same grill style. Their is a flat panel that is on the hood that seals with the panel behind the radiator to close off any hot air from coming into the rest of the bug.

Add the last pic. of the heater core from under the back seat of a vanagon for my cabin heater. I made it so tubes go to the center of the windshield and tubes that blow down at both sides of the foot areas.

. I will add more pictures and text over the next months as this mock up gets closer to finished and ready for paint. Rocky
