I'm trying to find or make a space-saver spare tire.
As the title says, I'm trying to do this, have a space-saver spare tire. As small as feasible. I have a 74 ghia, so, 4 lug system.
A friend of mine bought in Brazil one many years ago, but the place no longer exists. The way it was done was using a 14" rim from the brazilian "brasilias", it was cut and weld to be 3 1/2 inches wide, then they placed some VERY small tires on it. May be they were motorcicle wheels, I don't know.
I realise that here in the US that this is not that simple to get done. Principally in Dallas.
But I would like to have any kinds of suggestions. There must be someone else in there that wanted that too...
I have plenty of 15" 4 1/2 steel rims, may be there is something that can be done?
Thanks!
Luiz

I have a friend that mounted 125 series compact temporary spare tires onto regular beetle rims. They are very narrow and light weight.

I think he said they were suzuki spare tires, not certain. They were off an early 1990s car. Maybe Honda. Going to have to check with a tire shop. Make certain they know it is spare tire use only... My friend ran them at high speed without problems but it was risky.

Hi lcvaldetaro,
Just take an existing space saver tire and wheel you like, have a steel disk welded over its center and drilled and center-ported for the VW 4-lug pattern.
Space savers are almost throwaways. The biggest trick will be one that has enough offset to clear your brakes.

I use a BFG 155-80R15 as the spare in the nose, also same for the other four.
Not quite as small as a dedicated "temporary use" modern saver but last year I drove across oregon after encountering a sheet rock screw (w/ whooshing noise) just before the midway point.

Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Not something I'd be inclined to try/recommend, but I have seen a couple people use a stock VW 4-bolt 4.5" rim with a 15" motorcycle tire mounted on it as a temporary spare used at speeds less than 45mph to get to a tire store/repair shop.

if you feel like carrying a small pump you can use a 4 bolt Porsche spare.

Why overcomplicate this?
Use an early 4-lug 4" rim and a 125/80/15 tyre, simple.

I am using a 135/80-15 tire mounted on a stock wheel.

I did a 115/70 on a stock 4" rim for a Beetle that had been stuffed, and 125 on a 5.5" for another car...maybe $30 apiece for the tires at a junkyard.
