what size performance engine for a daily driver
Hi all I know ive asked a similar question before but ive decided to bit the bullet and spend some cash on building a new larger cc engine instead of trying to increase the power of the 1600cc engine I have. Right to start with I have about £3000 to £4000 to spend on the engine but can someone please help me with what to put in it ie the case I all ready have is a new super race case witch has been full flowed and can be cut for ether 90.5mm or 94mm pistons but what cam , what size crank , what heads , ect ect. Hope some one can help cheers. Ps it is for a daily driver so the engine must have a good idle and snappy response from idle and it must be able to sit at 70 mph for a good few hours at a time with out over heating ( my mates 2275cc is monster of a bug BUT my 1600cc can easily bet him of the line and is much better and fast in town traffic but on the motorway he smashes me easily but his engine will always and I me always start to over heat if he sits at 70mph for any length of time and yes it is full flowed with an extra cooler and all time wear is in place and in good nick) cheers all.

As I recall this is a Beetle which originally came with a 1200 or 1300 so you've got a 4.375:1 R&P swingaxle trans, and drum brakes all around, with adjusters in the beam and 145 front, 155 rear tires. So, it doesn't handle and probably doesn't stop very well, and has gearing that's about 15% too low for what you want....better reserve some of that budget to make the car ready for a big engine.
etc: Et cetera (in English contexts) is a Latin expression that means "and other things", or "and so forth".
ect: Electroconvulsive therapy, also known as electroshock therapy, a medical treatment

Gear box will be built to match engine out put and money has been out aside for that and new disc drums on front will be fitted at xmas if all goes well and rear discs later next year.

I agree with Marc's input of a balanced car totally; I also believe that for a daily driver KISS should be the watchword. It is too easy to slip and end up with something that requires more upkeep than a daily driver should have. My ex-father-in-law once rightly said that a daily driver should be able to get you to work and back everyday, get you across the country if you job (change?) requires it... in-other-words... something dependable every day; a "toy" should be a second car. I now it is stating the obvious but it is one of the few things he said to me that made sense then... and now.
(My opinion) A good (full flow?) oiling system with filter, a cylinder/piston set that won't wear out quickly or over heat, maybe a small stroker for "grunt", decent carburation or injection and a sensible exhaust system that will give you heat and defrost along all tied to Marc's suggestions.

90.5 s, + small turbo + fuel injection+ balancing 5500 rpm limit + tranny and brakes
I think the 3k runs out fast.
