VW newcomer

Post by jrachid »

Hello. I'm Jessica. I bought a 69 bug that's been in the family for years and its in need of a lot of work. I'm new to VWs and I'm excited to get started. I've been researching trying to figure out where to start.

Is the engine complete? Are you planning a resto or just a fun daily drive? I would start with getting it running and driving first to see what it needs don't other than the obvious stuff, it the engine and trans are in decent shape that's half of the battle.

Right now, the plan is to eventually do a full restoration with just basic mods to make it fast enough for the roads today. The last I have known this car to be running was 82. Sat outside in Cleveland for the last 5 or so years of its life. I didn't get keys with it either. It's really rusty. Kind of makes me nervous to sit in it at the moment. I'm more comfortable with mechanical work so maybe that's why the body scares me. hah. Maybe I'll give it a try and start with the engine/trans. See what it has and what I need to get it going.

The rust that you see is the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. There will be a lot more than you think and if you can weld your a head of the game. If you cant you need to learn how...it is VERY EXPENSIVE to have fixed.
