I am freshening up a low mileage engine (probably a rebuild) that looks like it has changed hands a lot. I took off the sled tins and found that one of the dog ears for the sled tin mounts is stripped. Somebody "repaired" it by using a bolt, washer, and nut (which, incidentally, ended up failing as the head of the bolt was too small for the hole in the sled tin). The options I see to repair it are:
HTS-2000 brazing rod that I have. It is supposed to work on magnesium. Is it safe to take a propane torch to a mag case?
JB Weld
Perhaps there is enough metal left to tap for a larger screw. I have to check, but IIRC the dog ear is minimal to begin with.
I am leaning towards the brazing rod then drilling and tapping. I am just afraid of starting some wild and crazy times with a magnesium fire.
Any better ideas?
The JB Weld or even the "steel" stick stuff should work well for the app.
You may also simply be able to simply install a solid insert, can't see if it has enough meat.
(You can DIY a pretty reasonable solid insert)
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
SteelStik: is that what you mean?
The engine is at my friend's place over thirty minutes away, otherwise I would have a picture. I am annoyed with the prior owner's bolt and washer "fix" because it looks like the vibrations wore the hole out more.
Fabbing or installing a solid insert would be a good fix.
